Good painters are in demand in Ohristchurch at the present time, and an optimistic note prevails in both the oil and colour and glass trades. Among tho building permits issued by the Christchurch City Council since May Ist is one to Messrs P. Graham and Son for reconstruction work on Strange's old building in High street. The value is £2400. Another is for repairs and additions to the Christchurch Club, by Messrs Packer and Jones, Ltd., to the value of £1001).

Painters and decorators in Dunedm have been kept moving fairly steadily, and not many have joined the unemployed ranks. It is reported from official circles that several big undertakings are planned for release shortly.

Speaking on the subject or warming the house, Mr H. Randell Phillips in a lecture recently delivered before the Architectural Association of Great Britain, said that some day rooms would be warmed invisibly by concealed openings in walls, floors, and ceilings.

An original electric light bracket is made to imitate a spray of clematis growing from tho wall. The flowers and leaves are made of clouded glass and are attached to a realistic piece ot moss or bark. This is screwed to the wall and the light from the bulb, which is hidden beneath the flowers, gives a soft glow and adds to tho impression that tho plant is alive.

English china is having increasingly large sales in America, in spite of the 60 per cent, duty, as it lias definite labour-saving properties. One dinner service particularly, with its rounded corners and complete absence or crevices, was calculated to simplify washing-up. The handles of the vegetable dishes, instead of jutting out and inviting breakages, were moulded into the line of the rims, while a rather deep base made it easier to hand round the dishes.

Building permits issued bv the Christchurch Citv Council since _ May Ist consist mainly of house additions and garages.

An additional room is now in course of erection at the Grev Main School prounds, under the supervision of Mr G. Bienell, foreman for the Canterbury Education Board. Tt will have a floor space of 24ft x 21ft 6in, and will provide accommodation for 50 pupils. Tho sixth standard boys, to the number of about 35. who are now located in the old Scouts' Hall, will be transferred to the new building. It is hoped that it will be ready for occupation next week.

The Leipzig Fair, at which about 10.000 firms exhibited, became both an international and universal world market. It was divided into two separate sections, known as the great engineering and btiildinjr fair and the samples fair. Lighting fittings and art and artist ; c handicraft were amongst the branches of the samnloa fair and th* engineering and building,section included power and driving machinery, transport plant, and engineering. •
