FOOTBALL.

LAST MINUTE WIN. INTER-SUB-UNIONS' MATCH. SOUTH BEATS NORTH. Only a few hundreds of people witnessed the annual match at Lancaster Park yosterday between Northern and Southern BubUnions, and it is safe to «t»te that they .were disappointed with the showing of the teams, the play being generally poor and unlnter* estinjfr relieved by an exciting finish, which gave the Southerners the victory in the last minute of the game. , . j . Neither team turned out »» » B '» oto »; * wo notable absentees being Toby and Tom Robinsun from the Southern *i<*e, » nd *? B B* ma was twenty minutes late in commencing. The Canterbury eelaotors (Messrs P. H» rv _ e y » n * R. R. Masters) were present in the hope of being able to discover one or two outstanding players with a view to strengthening tCe side to represent the Province against the British team next week, and to use on Canterbury £ southern tour later on in the season. The form shown, however, was far short of that displayed by the country Pl»yoj» laßt season, when Country beat Town. The forwards did not possess the dash tut-it to characteristic of them, nor were tney able to follow up as In previous year*. Their scrum work and line-out play also left much to be desired. It is on open secret that the selectors would be glad to find a lock tor forthcoming representative matches, and were hoping for success from yeßteroay s match, but the form of neither man in the opposing sides was Impressive. The play of the backs also left a good deal to be detired, and here again it it safe to stkUrthat on the form displayed It will be difficult for any country player tb gain a place. It must bo admitted, however, that the two ful-backs, Lee and Howatson, especially the latter, did some fine work. Indeed, Howatson' t kicking was really first-class.

The teams were:— ' .„...» Northern Sub-Unions (Bed and Blue)—J. Lee; T. Jordan. It. Slog. A. McMillan; T. McDonald. B. Eieh; B. Harrisons J. Low; J. Busch, 0. Watson, W. Prenderville, V. Smith, H. Karl G. Davidson, H. Gorrio. Southern Sub-Unions (White)—l. Howat■on; S. Allen, 0. Williams, 0. Mcintosh; B. S. Sherwin, 0. M. Wilton; L. H. Harrington; McKensie; W. Moore, B. Anderson, E. W. Thompson, B. Adams, M. Ryan, T. 8. Craw, N. Wltheli: ... - , For some time after the kick-off play centred about the half-way mark, Lee eventually making a good run, which he followed with a nice kick, the benefit of which was lost, however, when a forward got offside. A long kick by a Southern back resulted in a force-down. Play was scrappy and uninteresting, the Northern side being the more aggressive. There was too much kicking by both sets of backs, In consequence of which the backs did not get as many chances to open up the game as they should have had. Attempts on the part of the White backs to indulge in passing failed badly, the play continuing to be very crude. On resuming after half-time the Whites secured the ball twice In quick succession and sent their backs away on attack. On the first occasion the passing was neatly done, being handled by the line of baoks right to Mcintosh, but no ground was gained. The second attempt was equally unsuccessful, and once again play became ragged in character. Williams retired hurt and was replaced by an emergency. One of the few bright spot* of the game then occurred, Wilson picking up the ball and running strongly for the line. He had covered about twenty yards, and had only a few strides to go when he was overtaken and pulled down. In the closing stages of the game there wm a forward rush by the Whites, from which Anderson scored and Howatson converted, Southern Sub-Unions winning by 5 points to nil. Mr V. Oraw was referee.
