FIRES.
HOUSE BURNED DOWN. FAMILY ESCAPES. An old six-roomed house, at 20 Sandyford street,' Sydenham, was destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. The house, which was occupied by Mr Edward Gee and his wife and was owned by Mrs M. J. Manning, and was insured for £IBO in the State Fir© Office. The occupants, who were roused from sleep, succeeded in making good their escape, but the fire had a good hold when the Brigade received the call at 2.29 a.m., and it could not be checked to any great extent. The contents or' the house, which were not insured, eould not be removed, and were destroyed. SAWMILL DESTROYED. (MttSS A.SSO£tiMO* «I>IK}RAM.) NAPIER, May 14. A sawmill at Miromiro Station, near Waikarentoana, owned by Thomas Brothers, was totally destroyed by fire to-day. When the blaw was first noticed it had a strong hold and there was no possibility of saving any portion of the buildings, but a number of large stacks of timber were saved. The mill was partially covered by insurance, but in any case the owners are heavy losers. The destruction of the mill has temporarily thrown out of employment a number of married men, but the owners intend to rebuild immediately. The Government purchased the mill from a local company when the Walkaremoana hydro-electric works were commenced, and Thomas Brothers took it over fairly recently.
