PARKING CARS AT THE CIVIC THEATRE.
TO TUB SDITOa OF TUB I'KBS* Sir,:—l'notice in Saturday's Piikss that the Council intends to' erect a fence to prevent .motorists from park-, ing, their cars on the waste ground at the back of the Civic Theatre. Wo would like some explanation for this "dog-inrthe-:manger" attitude.. The land. vg-i not being used.; It is a great convenience .to patrons . of the. Civic Theatre to,,park tfyeir cars there, and 'the- congestion .of ."the .street parking places is thereby lessened. If the Council want this-parking, place properly controlled,. motorists would be pleased to pay a small sum to* have their cars looked after by some Council official.—-Yours, etc., CAR PARK. May 12th, 1930. ' [The Chief Traffic Inspector, Mr H. Macintosh, when shown this letter, said that the area .referred to; was not a parking place for everyone. Neither was it waste ground. In. order to allow the Plunket Society to occupy-the premises "previously used by the City Council's Reserve Department, a new brick building for that department had been erected at the rear of. the Civic Theatre. In this there were three garages, two of which were used by the .Reserve Department, and the- other by ■the Traffic: Department, whose inspec- . tors ' were also . accommodated there. : .Cars' were often taken . out at night by the .'Staffs of the • departments : mentioned, and ; it*-was essential that they .should bo able-.to get out with .a. minimum, of delay. Some. of the. Councillors attending meetings of the.City Council parked their-.cars behind the building also. In the past, Mr Macintosh added, certain members of the public; had been in-' the habit of parking-.their vehicles "in the ytfrd'-wittioutf regard to who'might be inconvenienced thereby, some cars facing-one way, and:others beside.them facing in.the opposite direction. It had. therefore been decided that-in future no •private cars' should be allowed.to • stand in the yard,"'and to ensure this a 3 fence had bden erected.] '■ ,
