NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

Athletics. At a meeting of the Athletic Club on Wednesday evening last it was decided to hold the annual dance and presentation of trophies in Joyland Theatre on May 17th. Association football. The local club started off the season well by winning its first competition match last Saturday. The seniors play Western in the Domain this afternoon. It is pleasing to note that the club has formed a team composed of scholars from tho New Brighton School this year, including two boys who represented Canterbury last year. The team has been entered in the primary schools competition. Personals.

Guests at the New Brighton Cafe include Miss Todd (Wellington), Mr Amodeo (Wellington), Mr and 'Mrs J. Foreman (Auckland), and Mr Wilkinson (Dunedin). Rugby Football.

As a result of the re-organisation of the New Brighton Eugby Football Club this year, Brighton now has a very strong team entered in the junior 3 competition. The side is a heavy one and contains some fast forwards. The match for to-day is against Richmond In the Rawhiti Domain. Tides. It will be high tide at 7.50 a.m. and 8.15 p.m. on the beach to-day, and 8.34 a.m. and 8.59 p.m. in the river. Sunday: 8.44 a.m. and 9.9 p.m. on the beach, and 9.28 a.m. and 9.53 p.m. in the river. Whist Drive. The New Brighton Croquet Club held its weekly whist drive on Thursday evening last, the hostess being Mrs W. Cooke. Prises were won by Misses E. Tilleyshort and F. Blunt. Amalgamation with Ohristchurch. The question of Brighton amalgamating with Christchurch has been discussed at great length in the borough lately, and there are many residents who consider that within a year or two New Brighton will become an integral part of the City. The matter < was brought up at the last meeting of ths Borough Council and a committee was set up with a view to seeking information on the question. Public Library. The annual meeting of subscribers was held during the week, Mr R. Lightbody presiding after a good attendance. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Chairman, Mr R. Lightbody; committee, Messrs A. Grant, T. Joynt, Dr. Glasgow, Messrs A. B. Grant, J. D. Brown, Mesdames C. Hackley, A. Dey, J. Bellamy, A. Treleaven, and Miss Gott; Council representative, Mr G. W. Bishop; secretary and treasurer,. Mr F. J. Bromley; hon. auditor, Mr T. Joynt; purchasing committee, Mrs C. Hackley and Mr J. D. Brown. It was decided to ask the New Brighton Borough Council to strike a rate for the benefit of the library for the ensuing year. Tho chairman and secretary 1 were appointed to wait on the Council in this connexion.

The report showed that 427 books haft been added to the library during the year, and 180 discarded. Membership totalled 163. , The balance-sheet showed a credit of *i£4 10s 9d. Beserves Inspection. With a view to further" tree-planting, the Reserves Committee of the New Brighton Borough Council will carry out an inspection of reserves this afternoon. Saturday next has been set aside for the borough inspection. NORTH BEACH. Amalgamation with Greater Christchurch. At the last meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council, a snb-com-mittee consisting of the Mayor, Crs. F. D. Muirson, G. W. Bishop, E. A. M. Leaver, and E. L. Smith was appointed to go "into the matter of amalgamation with tfreater Chriatchurch. New Brighton Band. The monthly meeting of the New Brighton Municipal Band Committee and representatives of the New Brighton Borough Council was held in tho Band nail, Cr. Leaver presiding. Or. A. E. Lawry complimented the band on its splendid parade in connexion with th,e Anzac service at New Brighton. It was decided to recommend the band to give a Sunday night concert after church service in aid «i the unemployment fund. ,_ „ . Tho interior of the Band Hall being nearly completed, it is the intention of the bnnd to hold a social to open the hall officially at an early date. Anniversary Social. j The North Beach and Waimairi Progress League will celebrate its 18th anniversary by a social, card party, and I dance in the Peace Memorial Hall on Saturday evening. The first meeting I was held on May 3rd, 1911, in Uncle ' Tom's Oabin, those present being I Messrs J. H. Coates (chairman), H. R. Wade, P. Butler, A. Duggan, H. Wagstaff, «A. W. Jones, A. T. Woolmer, E. A. M. Leaver (secretary), and Dr. Neeley. • " Racecourse Boad. At the last meeting of the New Brighton Borough Cou'ndl, it was decided to ask the Waimairi County Council to approach the Highways Board with a view to having the North Beach bus route declared a subsidiary highway. Triple Chute. The chute on the foreshore at North Beach has been taken down for the winter, and will be repaired, prior to reerection. Personals. Mr W. E. Leverett has returned from a brief holiday spent in Sumner. Mrs 11. Jones (Hastings), who has been staying at North Beach, returned north on Thursday. ■Mr Colin E. Scott, of Takaka, Nelson, has been visiting his brother, Mr P. J. Lawrence Scott, of North Beach.
