Access to the Sea

Reference to the likely effect that the finding of the Commission set up In Christchurch to hear evidenco on the subject of access to the sea, might have on the Ashburton county was made at tho Ashburton County Council meeting, yesterday, by Mr W- G. Gallagher. He moved that the; Council give evidence before the Commission and take steps to see that whatever was done, no extra cost would be entailed to the Ashburton ratepayers or that Ashburton would not be included in any rating area if a scheme was adopted. He stated that the Lyttelton Harbour Board was in a good financial position while its charges were the lowest on record, and it had up-to-date facilities for the handling of produce for many years to come. A tunnel road would cost nearly £600,000, while it was estimated that a large sum would be required to construct facilities for motor transport if the tunnel road was adopted. Tho money could only be found by increased charges. As primary produce from the Ashburton County would be carried by rail for many years yet, motor transport facilities to Lyttelton would be of no use to the district, therefore the Council hak a duty to protect the ratepayers from any increase in rates that might be forced upon them. Mr ,W. T. Lill said that the tunnel road was not going to benefit Ashburton at all. If a rate was necessary for any scheme, Ashburton should be outside the rating area. They were in the happy position of being able to use the Timaru Harbour if necessary. The motion was carried and Messrs J. Carr (chairman) and W. G. Gallagher were deputed to collect information to place before the Commission. RAKAIA. A very successful children's fancy dress ball was held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening under the auspices of the Edith Cavell (Rebekah) Lodge. There was a large attendance.
