DOMAIN FETE.

* ANTICIPATED PROCEEDS £250. WORK TO BE STARTED SOON. It was stated at yesterday's meeting of the Domains Board that the proceeds of the fete held in the Botanic Gardens, with subsidy, would amount to between £4OO and £SOO. Mr E. H. Mitchell, who acted as treasurer, wrote that the total collections to date from all sources was £2Ol 5s 3d, from which had to be deducted ed sandwichman, 10s; and printing tickets, circulars, etc., £4 7s; total -£4 17s, leaving a balance of £196 8s 3d. He! had not seen particulars of further expenses, but in the aggregate they should not exceed £2O. Sums for the sale of tickets were still coming in. . Mr H. Kitson said that he anticipated that the total . receipts would reach about £250. Taking into consi eration the lateness of the season, and tho cold east wind, the fete must be considered a success. The chairman moved: "That a vote of thanks be accorded to all the workers who helped to make the a success." There had been sufficient attractions, he said, to have amused a crowd of two thousand. The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs J. K. Archer), and Mrs J. S. Neville, had worked strenuously and willingly, lue Mayor attended early in the morning, and cut up sandwiches "like a butcher." Mr Harper added that he did not intend his motion to apply to members of the Board. Mr P. George seconded and referred' to the wonderful work done by the ladies, and mentioned Mrs Holmes, who, he said, had ran the tea tent in a manner that was a credit to herself, and 'her Btaff. The motion was agreed to. The Hon. D. Buddo . suggested that the Fete should be held annually, about the end of February. Mr George said that, with subsidy, they would have £4OO or £SOO available. .It was desirable,' owing to the urgency for finding work for unemployed soldiers, that the work ia con-

nexion with _ the improvement of the paths in the North Park 'should be put in hand at once. On his motion the following committee was • set up, with power to act, to arrange for the work: ; Messrs Harper, Buddo, Kitson, Owen, i and George. Eeplying to Mr W. T. Foster, the chairman said that the subsidy was bcin£ provided by the R.S.A. It was suggested that the City Council and the Government should also be asked to subsidise the amount. The chairman explained that the Board did not come under the definition of a "local authority," and possibly difficulty would be experienced in obtaining a Government subsidy. However, he thought that they should try to get a subsidy from anybody they could. ,
