Miss Pearl Synder, of Newark, was serving as a member of a jury, when just as they were about to retire to consider tfieir verdict she received' a message saying that a relative was ill. She promptly walked out of the Court. The rest of the jury, all men, carried on, and after three hours' deliberation decided to award £IOO to the complainant. The Judge, however, noted'the absence of Miss Snyder, rejected the verdict, and ordered a new trial. The police president of Berlin has fixed May Ist as the date by which all taxi-cab chauffeurs in that city must appear in tlie prescribed uniform caps and coats. By next December uniform overcoats .must be added. Three hundred further taxi-cabs have just been equipped with " taxi-meters which deliver to the passenger a printed receipt containing the amount of the fare, the name and address of the cab's owner, and its number.
