Mr J. D. Burns, Supervisor of Telegraphs at Hokitika, has been transferred to the position of Supervisor Telegraph branch at Christchurch. Mr R. L. Kent's motion was defeated. It was resolyed to inform Mr Keddie of ™»o position. , Mrs M. A. Hopkins wrote that the Council's proposals for taking over a 1 section from her was agreeable to her. It was stated that the land would be known as Hopkins Park. The Council decided to meet the Greymouth Harbour Board and discuss the question of supplying water for shipping purposes on the Grey wharf. The Director of Town Planning wrote asking the Council to place its proposed civic scheme before him in writing. The borough engineer reported that 16 building permits to the value of £4286 were issued during April. During the fortnight ended April 30th the reservoir was kept full with an average daily run of a little over seven hours. For the previous fortnight the average run had been 8J hours. The Mayor referred to the recent contretemps which had occurred in the Greymouth Municipal Band which had resulted in the resignation of the conductor, Mr A. McMaster. He stated that while the band hid contracted liabilities, the_ borough was not liable, it having agreed to subsidise the band to the of £6O per annum. Recently an Advisory Board was formed, when it was found that the. band's liabilities were some £7OO. Schemes had been devised to liquidate these., but so far with no material result. The Advisory ■Board consisted of Dr. J. W. MeBrearty, the Mayor (Mr J. W. Greenslade), Messrs W. H. Parfltt, and T. A. W. .Tate. Mr W. D. Murray, the band's secretary, was present, and stated that the band's annual meeting would be held next week, when the audited bal-ance-sheet would be presented. ' Timber Slump. It was authoritatively stated to-day that 75 per cent, of the sawmills on the West Coast were not averaging more than four days' work per week at present, while some of them have been idle "for a month. The reason given is that the depression was a reflex on the existing economic conditions in Australia. The demand.for West Coast white pine was slack, whilst the demand for red pine was a little better. Three out of four mills on the West Coast were'dependent upon red pine to. keep them going. Boring at Okarito. A boring plant is now being delivered at Okarito Forks, and boring operations are.to take place at the back of Okarito Lagoon, in a locality where there was a gold find in the early dayß; but methods and machinery of those dayß were not equal to the proposition.
