ANNUAL MEETING. 1 The anuual meeting of the Scottish Society of New Zealand was held last night. Chief J. S. Chisholm presiding. There was | a numerous iattendance. . • | Tho twenty-eighth annual report set out that from a financial and social point of view the Society was to be congratulated on the successful results of tho year. New members numbered 19. Tho expenditure hud been heavy, but receipts had exceeded' expectations. The sum of £6OO had been paid off tho mortgage. on tho- property, leaviug £BOO still owing. AH going well, it was hoped that this would bo wiped' off by th»i end oC the financial year, ltefercneos wore made to the successes of the Society's Pipe Band at Dunedin and on the West Coast. The Chief, in moving ..the adoption of the report, referred to the' deaths of several prominent members, and mentioned that the lato Mr Hector Mathiesou had bequeathed £IOO to the Society. Mr A. A. McLachlan seconded tho motion, which was agreed to. The balance-sheet, which showed a balance to credit of JK3B, was adopted. Past-Chief A. W. MacGillivray took the chair during the election of chief and councillors. Tho election of chief resulted: A. A. McLachlan, 38; J. S. Chisholm, 31. Mr McLuehlan, in returning thanks, said that it was unlikely that, like Mr Chisholm. ho would give seven years' service, and at the end of his yoar of office he would be moving the election of Mr Chisholm. He thought that Mr Chisholm should be elected an honorary member b£ the Society; no one in the Society merited that honour more than Mr (Applause.) Ho had not only worked hard in his palmier days when Ins health was better, but had struggled on when things were otherwise. He moved a vote- of thanks to Mr Chisholm ond appreciation of'his services, and this was carried by acclamation. Mr Chisholm, referring to the result of the election, said that ho must accept it as n vote of no confidence, and it. was his intention to resign from " the Society. He attributed his defeat to political causes. Several members urged Mr Chisholm to reconsider his decision, and a motion to that effect was agreed to unanimously. ' On the motion of the chairman, and by ncclnmntion, Mr Chisholm was elected an active life member of the Society. Chief McLachlan then took the chair. , Mr Chisholm extended his congratulations to the new chief, and wished him all possible success in his new position. The following were elected to nil • vacancies on the Council:—Messrs G A D. Sutherland D A. Campbell. Peter Grieve, Malcolm Shier, James Wills, Harold Johnston, David Siovw'right. and George Speirs. Messrs A. M. Paterson and Wm. Gray werp elected auditors. _ A motion *o pmend the rule *ovennn<r the election of the chief, altering the method by providing that the chief should be elected ov the council instead of the members, was negatived.
