DRIVING ON FOOTPATH.
STUDENT FINED. ; (PEESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, April 30. A sequel to the meandering of an ancient motor-car through Queen street one day during, the inter-University tournament was the appearance of Gordon H. S. Grant in the Magistrate's Court to-day, charged with 'dangerous driving and'driving on the footpath. The first -charge was dismissed. On the second, the defendant was fined £l, The Magistrate, described the escapade as stupid. The circumstances, said counsel, were unusual, and any remarks he might make were not designed to excuse the organisation responsible for the "rag*" but to show that the whole thing was rather amusing at the moment. The (organisation was the Hongi Club, and its members conceived the idea of using a £lO car as a medium for. advertising the 'Varsity swimming carnival dunhg Easter week.' They, accordingly secured a car, and the remarkable fact was that it went at.all r for it had a 1914 chassis,' and- the. body was tacked together with bits of wood; The 'contraption/ had to be 1 seen to be believed.; it was painted white.
