THE SQUARE.
IMPROVEMENT PLANS.
THE MAYOR'S ASSURANCE.
That provision for both shelters and conveniences will be made in whatever plan for the reconstruction of the Square j/.oes before Parliament in the form of a Bill was the assurance given by the Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) when speaking at a meeting of ratepayers at Sydenham last night. Discussion arose through a ratspayer enquiring why the Council had not proceeded with it? plan for building women's rest rooms in the Square. Mr' Armstrong replied that the scheme would have been completed long ago except that one or two citizens had appealed to the Supreme Court and had been successful in obtaining an injuncticn. The Council had been obliged to abide by the law. ''The funny part about it all," he added, "is that* this scheme was not tho Labour Council's at all. It was approved unanimously by the Council wnen the Citizens' Party was in office, and I believe that, had they been returned, their original plan would have been carried out without hindrance.
"But I read in the papers the other day that Mr Gould did not know whether ho would enforce the injunction, and I asked. 'Who is Mr Gould'? Who elected him to represent the people? I think we should go to Parliament with a Bill, and I believe we would get it through. We've got to improve that 'eyesore' in the Square. The Mayor (Mr J. K. Aicher) explained that they were hopeful ot getting a plan through which would be acceptable to all members of the United Committee. This would then go to Parliament, or, if this failed, some other plan would go. "You can take it from me," he added, "that whatever plan does go before Parliament, there will be provision in it for both shelters ana conveniences."
