RETURNED SOLDIERS' ASSOCIATION.

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE.

At the fortnightly meeting of the executive of the Christchurch Eeturned Soldiers' Association, tho following were present: —Messrs G. A. Hayden, W. E. Leadley, C. H. Chisnall, C. H. Holmes, A. L. Emerson, H. H. Boundy, S. F. Marshall. E. W. Smith, E. \V. Cuddon, B. H. G. Fleck, and the secretary. Several letters of thanks were received for services rendered by the Association to individual returned men or their dependents. The Military Secretary to his Excellency the Governor-General wrote thanking the Association for its message of welcome and good wishes on the arrival of his Excellency in the Dominion.

Bear-Admiral B. E. Byrd wrote expressing regret that he would be unable to accept the invitation of the Association to attend a smoke concert, on account of pressure of business in connexion with the expedition. It was decided to make a further grant /of £IOO to the Christchurch City Council subject to the usual Bubsidy, to enable work to be undertaken by returned soldiers who are at present unemployed. Mr H. G. Ell made application for a subsidy to enable a pathway to be completed on the Cashmere Hills. He was prepared to employ four returned soldiers for two weeks.—A subsidy up to £l7 10s was granted.

It was decided to interview the JPaimakariri River Trust with a view to ascertaining if arrangements could be made to place some returned soldiers in employment in the near future. The report of the organiser -of the Poppy Day appeal showed that arrangements were well in hand.

In view of the fact that the finding of the Rehabilitation Commission has been in the hands of the Government? since the beginning of February, a resolution was passed asking that the contents of the report be released for lieation at an early date. . It waß decided to hold another Anzac Day essay competition among the pupils of Standards V. and VI. of the primary schools in Canterbury district. The titlo of the essay this year is "Lessons of the Great War."
