GREYMOUTH, March 27.

Commissioner Cunningham, of the Salvation Army, is the guest of Dr. and Mrs E. D. Dunn, of Weutport. Mr Colin Smeaton, who has been spending a holiday with his parents, Mr and Mrs J. Smeaton, Dobson, left for Wellington to-day. Mr A. E. B. Denavon left this morning for Wellington, en route to Samoa. Mr H Eustace, of the Railway locomotive branch, left to-day on transfer to Palmerston North. Mr E. Scott loft to-day to take up an appointment in Wellington. M r A. C. Snowden, of the Railway locomotive branch at Otira, has been transferred to Greymouth. Mr J. P. Mullins, who has been relieving ' inspector of permanent ways at Greymouth, during the past twelve months, roturncd to Christchurch to-day. Ho is to bo succeeded by Mr J. Handcoclt, from tho North Island. The engagement is announced of Miss Mary Thorn, third "daughter of Mr and Mrs T. Thorn, of Waiuta, to Mr Henry Coulson, of Newcastle, England. Mr J. McMullen, who, for tho past twelve months has bocn attached to tho Greymouth Kailway Department, was presented with a gold watch by his fellow employees, on the ove of bis departure for Christchureh. Mr 8. Lingard, of the Magistrate's Court staff, Westport, who won a School of Mines scholarship, left to-day to prosecute his studies at Otago University. He was presented last oven-, ing with an Eversharp pencil. Mr B. Ryan, who has been spending a holiday in Greymouth, returned today to Fraokton Junction. Mr C. C. Obituary. The death occurred suddenly last evening of Mrs Mary Ann Thornton, proprietress of Revington's Hotel, Greymouth. She was born in the Goldsborough district 60 years ago, and sp6nt her younger years at No Town, Grey Valley. After her marriage to Mr James Thornton, who predeceased her by 27 years, she managed the Bailway ftotel at Ngahero for ten years. She then came to Greymouth and took over Revington's Hotel, subsequently becoming proprietress of the Albion Hotel until last Junp, when she returned to Revington's, as proprietress. Sho leaves three daughters— Walker and Marshall (Greymouth), and Loftus MeViear (Totara Plat) and one son—Mr James Thornton (Ngahcrc. Hardwood Timber. On board the Poolta, which is duo to arrive at Greymouth at an early date, will bo 25,000 feet of hardwood timber and 17 piles, for the construction of the County bridges between Rotomanu and Inchbonnie. Grey Bar. The depth on the Grey bar at high water yesterday was 14ft llin. There are five vessels in port. The swell on the bar and the low depth of water still prevent their departure. The manager of the Union Company, Mr W. B. Cunningham, has received advice from his head office, that in view of the decreased depth of water on the bar, the company has decided definitely that it cannot risk tonnage to load timber at Greymouth for Australian ports pending an improvement. The Poolta and Kalingo are two of the vessels affected by the company'a decision. It is understood that over four million feet of timber it awaking shipment to Australian ports. The latest development constitutes another serious setback to the timber industry. The Westport bar is also in a bad condition, there being only about 18ft 6in at high water yesterday, consequent ly steamers are sailing short loaded.

Hospital Ambulance. The Grey Hospital Board's new ambulance has been put into commission. The vehicle has a specially-con-structed ambulance chassis and embodies the latest innovations in ambulanee constriction.

Motor-Oar Traffic. The number of motor-cars railed between Otira and Springfield during the past quarter was: —To Otira, 389; from Otira, 431. Most of the inward cars were, en route to the glacier districts, the heaviest traffic being during January, instead of during December, as in previous years, Bunanga School of Mines. The Minister for Mines has approved of arrangements to have mathematics and electricity taught at the school, An endeavour will be made to obtain the services of a teacher from the Bunanga State School for two hours a week, one hour to be devoted to arithmetic and One hour to mathematics. tuition in electricity, arrangements will be made to obtain the services of the electrician at the State colliery to deliver a series of twelve lectures, each lecture to be of «two hours' duration. A £ for £ subsidy on fees collected has also been approved.

Lake Kanieri. Arrangements are in hand to extend Dorothy Falls road to its first objective—the falls. A camp is now being established at the end of the present road. It is understood that the road will be constructed during the winter, aB unemployed labour may be available. Magistrate's Court. A sitting, of the Magistrate's Court was held to-day at Hokitika. Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., presided. Wm. Boche was charged with travelling at an excessive speed in a motorcar when rounding a corner and was fined 20s, and costs 20s 6d. Clarence Schraeder, for driving a motorcar at an excessive speed at a street intersection, was fined 20s, and costs 20s 6d.

John Singer, charged with failure to send two children to school, pleaded guilty, and was fined ss, and costs 10s, on each -charge. Hector McDonald, of Christchurch, was charged with failure to pay maintenance arrears totalling £l3 12s 6d. An order was made for the payment of this amount and costs before April 20th; in default one month's imprisonment. \ Hospital Board. The Grey Hospital Board met this evening. Present: Messrs J. W. Hannan (chairman), H. J. Carter, G. R. Harker, E. ABhton, J. Mulcare, R. Mc> Taggart,'J. Brislane, the Eev. W. Bell, and Mrs O'Brien.

The Department of Health forwarded a report on an inspection of Rewa Hospital by Dr. Paget. Mr Carter, speaking in regard to the delays in completing work xequistioned by the several departments of the hospital, thought a report of such requisitions should be placed before meetings of the Board. It was resolved that time books be supplied to the staff, and that details of work done be properly recorded for the Board's inspection. It was decided that applications be called for the position of laboratory assistant. The salary of the sister in

charge of the laboratory was increased by A 25 per annum. It was decided to ascertain the scale of salaries paid at other hospitals and to fix a scale for the Grey Hospital. The resignation of Dr. Denavon, house surgeon, was accepted with regret and a motion in appreciation of his services was recorded.

Doboon Mine. Messrs J. SmeatOn (president of the West Coast Miners' Council) and A. McLagan (secretary) will leave for Wellington on Saturday to confer with the Coal Miners' Association regarding the present deadlock at the Grey Valley collieries. Miner Injured. A miner named Bobson was injured yesterday through a fall of atone. He was romoved to his home, where Dr. Meade pronounced his injuries not serious.
