The annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Basketball Club was held on Tuesday evening, Mr H. W. Childs presiding over an attendance of 30 members. The annual report and balance-sheet (the tatter showing a credit balance of £7 & 8(1) were adopted- The following presentation of prizes were made:—The president's trophv (Mrs A. Pearce) to the best player in the senior team — Miss J. McGranie Best player in the junior A team (anonymous donor), Miss G. Taplin. Mr H. W. CHEVIOT, Mrs A. M. Hvde presided over the monthly meeting of the Presbyterian Ladies' Guild, which was held in the Presbyterian Hall,' those present being Mesdames A. Williamson, 7. H. Upston, A. D. Fraser, E. Savage, S. C. Gordon, J. McAdam, and B. Morgan. CULVERDEN. At the annual meeting of the Culverden Football Club, twenty members were present, and Mr W. V. Mockett occupied the chair. The annual report and the balance-sheet were read and adopted. It was left to the committee to formulate an insurance scheme. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the ladies for providing afternoon teas during the past season. LEITHFIELD. At the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Lodge of Oddfellows there was an attendance of 25 members, presided over by Bro. J. Dimmqck. A letter df recommendation was received from Makikihi Lodge, on behalf of Bro. W. Culling, who is now residing in the district. A conference was held, with Dr. Fossy, the new medical officer of the Friendly Societies. ■ At a public meeting, over which Mr T s Russell presided, it was decided in hold a social, the proceeds to ho divided between the library, the swimaing club, and the school.

PARNASSUS. The Spotswood Tennis Club held its annual (Jance in the Spotswood dallThere were many visitors from Cheviot, Kaikoura, Domett, and Parnassus, and a thoroughly enjoyable evening was spent. The music was supplied by the Parnassus Orchestra, extras peing played by Mrs Owen and Mr Dunnage, Messrs F. Upstqji ant} J. B. Stevenson were M.C.'s. Another function of particular interest to residents took place when a farewell social was tendered to Mr and Mrs S. Gibson, who are leaving the district to reside in Hororata. The hall was packed, and there were many visitors from other districts. Mr T. Stevenson, on behalf of the residents, presented Mr and Mrs Gibson with a substantial cheque In his remarks Mr Stevenson referred to the copd qualities of Mr Gibson and his family, and to the services Mr Gibson had rendered to the sporting community. Ho referred also to Mrs Gibson's readiness to help with all local functions, fcq her invaluable help in organising school con-r certs, and to her efforts on behalf of the local branch of the Plunket Society. Mrs Stnjthers presented Mr? Gibson with a pyrex dish, and thanked her for her interest in Plunket work' Mr Gibson, in replying on behalf of his wife and family, thanked those assembled for their gifts and good wishes. The singing of "For they are jolly good fellows" brought this part of the function to an end. Music for dancing was supplied by Mrs Owen, Mrs Stevenson, Mrs Murray, Messr ß Dunnage, Fitzgibbon. and C. Carter and the Parnassus Orchestra. Messrs, W. Kelly and J. B. Stevenson were M.C.'s. Fishing iti the Waiau, Mr J- W. Wilderflioth landed a salmon weighing 30Jlb- The length of the ssb was 42in and the girth 37in. It was caught on the silver devon. BALCAIRN. On Sunday evening; a harvest festival service held in §t. Jobtt'S Anglican Church, which was beautifully decorated. Ther«> was a large congregation. The Rev. J. W. Knigh^ s preached an appropriate sermon, Mrs Knights presided at the organ. The offortory goes to St. Saviours. The fruit, preserves, vegetables, etc.,_ wera sent on Monday to St. Saviour's Orphanagje. At the close of the service the Rev. J. \V. Knights presented the prices won at the scripture classes held in the school during the year. Threshing mills started again on. Mondav, after having been idle for a fortnight. A week or so of fine weather should see the conclusion of this work. Farmers are busy ploughing. Hie weather has beep warjn and very dry. Feed t in consequence, is drying up. Hflin is urgently needed.

AKAROA.

The Peninsula cricket competition is now almost completed. Wainui and Little River played a drawn game on Saturday last. Akaroa and Little River play at Akaroa on Saturday. Should Akaroa defeat Little River, Wainui will win the cup. Should Little River win, they will bo equal with Wainui, and another match will have to be played between those two clubs. Mr W. Green, whe has been resident in Akaroa during the past ten years, and woodwork instructor at the Akaroa District High School for some years, has received notice that he has been appointed woodwork instructor to the Morrinsville and Ngaruawahia Schools, in.the Auckland Education District. Mr Green will leave here early next month to commence his new duties. The recent warm weather has hastened the Opening of the walnut crop, and growers are at' present engaged in threshing operations. Indications are that there will be an improved yield on last year's crop. The nuts ap< {tear to be sounder, and more free from illght than during recent years.

TAI TAPU. St. Paul's Anglican Church was beautifully decorated by tho, ladies of tho congregation, with flowers and fruits of tho field, for the harvest thanksgiving services on Sunday last. These were conducted by the ttev. A. H. Acheson, in the morning, and by Mr P. H. Bailey, in the evening. There were large quantities of gifts, which wero sent to ©t. Saviour's Orphanage this week. . The harvest thanksgiving services at the Tai Tapu Methodist Church wer6 also held on Sunday. The preacher »t the morning service was tne Rev. T. J. Harris, and the evening service. Mr j.Voss.of Bpreydon. The church was very prettily decorated [ with flowers and autumn leaves fruit and vege« tables. Special music was contributed, solos being sung by Mesdames Harris, L. Dulieu. and Mr Tennent. and a quartette by Mesdames K. and B. Peryman, Messrs Griffiths and Bishop. In the evening Mr Bishop sang a solo, and the onoir sang an anthem. Large congregations were present. A letter nas been received from the British and Foreign Bible Society acknowledging with thanks the sum ot £l3 6s 3d, which had been collected by women members of the Anglican, Methodist, and Presbyterian Churches. .Mrs Coomridgo. and her daughter, of Hamilton, are the guests of Mrs T. O. Morgan, Tai Tapu. Mr and Mrs John Micha«l have returned from a pleasant holiday spent at the Bays, Akaroa. Mrs R. Maoartney has returned from Timaru.

SOUTH MALVERN. Mr J. A. McCauzhan presided over a meeting of, the committee of tho Black Diamond Football Club, there being a good attendance. _ The delegates to the annual meeting of the Malvern Rugby Sub-Union reported on that meeting, and were thanked fof their report. The arrangements made by tho president and secretary for transport for teams for the coming season were endorsed. It was' decided to pay half the cost of putting the playing field in the Domain in good order. The secretary was instructed to arrange friendly matches for March 29th and April sth. the latter match to be Oxford v. Glentunuel, at Glentunnel. Messrs L. Workman and W. J. Teale were appointed to take charge of the under 17 team. The annual picnic of the South Malvern Sunday School waß held at "Rockwood." the residence of Mr and Mrs S. ROseveare. Although the weather was dull, a most enjoyable time was spent, the children eagerH taking part in ft lengthy programme of sports. Games were also played bv all. and rambles through the bush proved most interesting. Before the picnickers took their departure, Mr Jones voiced the thanks of the children and adults present to Mr Roseveare, for his hospitality. Farmers are beginning to be somewhat anxious about winter feed, the north-west weather conditions which have been prevailing for practicallv a fortnight having dried up grass, and other, feed considerably. A good rain would be very welcome. The dinner at the annual ewe fair at Coalgate was conducted by the ladies of the Anglican and Presbyterian Churches. Glentunnel. and as the result of their' efforts and the generosity of their friends, a goodlv sum was raised towards the funds of the churches named.
