. . « ANNUAL MEETING OF SUBSCRIBERS. The subscribers to the Sydenham . Publio Library held their twenty third annual meeting last evening, Mr 0. Pollard presiding. The annual report stated that every effort had been made to bring the Library up to date, and in ! 'this respect speoial mention was due to the wholehearted work of the librarian. Miss Malcolmsos. It was intended in future to exercise strict supervision over all books returned and the role regarding damaged books would be rigidly enforced. The eus> todian continued to carry out all his duties in connexion with the library in his usual efficient manner, and his courtesy and tact were greatly appreciated by all patrons of the book room. It was very gratifying to the committee to see that the reading room was in such great demand, and appreciated by the residents of the district. The alterations in the circulating department, and the extra shelving space available for books had made the library very attractive; whereas last year's increase of subscribers was 10, this year's increase amounted to 165, making a total of BSS subscribers. During the. year 1070 new books bad been placed ok the shelves, making a total in circulation of 12,000. During the year several billiards tournaments were held, and created a good deal of friendly rivalry, and the committee intended to commence these again at ah early date. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £94 16s Bd. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mr 0. Pollard; vicepresident, lit L. Kent; secretary, Mr H. leComte; treasurer, Mr R. W. Bart; 1 .carian, Miss A. Malcolm son; auditors, Messrs E. MeCarrigan and F. A. Neale; Ladies' Committee, Meedames Thompson and Mad' dren, Misses Logan, Malcolmson, and Hors* nell; Men's Committee, Messrs C. Small, H. Hales. H. Hughes, 3. W. Cork, W. Hart, W. Smith, C. Thompson, F. Simpson! E. Edwards, E. Oopplestone, W. Gougb, T. Ourtin, and E. Langley. Several members mentioned that _ the books were mutilated by the subscribers when they were out of the library. ' As a result more money was . being spent each year on rebinding. It was resolved that notices be printed' and put up in the library asking subscribers to exercise more care in the handling of the books. It was resolved to purchase 12 new cues for the billards tables in' the recreation room.
