SUMNER AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF BEAUTIFYING; ASSOCIATION. Mr S. K. Bassett presided over a meeting of the executive of the Sumner Beautifying and Beaoh Improvement Association last evening. In connexion with the membership roll, it was stated that some years ago a membership campaign was held in the borough with good results. It nu decided to hold a membership campaign on the iinos of that held some time ago. The Sumner Surf and Life-Saving Club wrote advising that it was proposed t<S move the seats, provided by the Beautifying Association from, the shelter of ; the pavilion wall, out into the enclosure round the clubhouse. It was decided to reply that whilethe Association was quite willing to allow the eeats to. be moved during : the bathing season,' they considered that the seats' should be replaced during the winter, when they were frequently used by elderly people. The following new members were elected: Mr and Mrs.-C. R. Craythorne. -Mr and Mrs A. F. Scott, Messrs >E. Archbold, C. P. Hines,. and A. G. Gurnsey. The secretary reported on the work carried out on the Esplanade near the Cave Bock, the total cost of -which was , £56. Arrangements hod been made to eow the remaining beds with grass seed. The laboar entailed would not be a charge on. the Association. '

It was stated that if the planting scheme is successful, arrangements for regular attention by ' a Council employee ' would have to be, made. It was decided to interview the Mayor in this connexion.

It was suggested - that the Association might direct some of its activities this year to the foot of the hill'at Scarborough, where tbero were many "p'ookets" which would lend themselves to'improvement. This, matter was .referred to the incoming committee.

A discussion took place as to the advisability of 'planting perennials or annuals on the. Esplanade flower plots. Offers were received of several/ hundred cuttings of ivy geraniums, the .planting of which was undertaken by Mr J. S. Toung.
