APPROACH OF WINTER.

NO APPRECIABLE SLACKENING YET. Usually at this time of year bnilding contractors anticipate a slacken-ing-off in house construction and other activities in the industry, but there has been no sign of such development yet this year. The long spell of fine weather has probably infused the trade with a certain amount of optimism, in spite of other depressing circumstances. Nothing affects the building trade worse than a protracted spell of unsettled weather, which: means the closing down of work on house jobs and others where operations out-of-doors are rendered impossible. The next big undertaking in sight is the reconstruction of the City Abat- , toirs, which Bhould be commenced' before winter. Work on the plans is well advanced, and they should be ready for tendering by the end of the month. Preparations are being made to erect an oil store for a well-known oil company in a section adjacent to the present store of the Texas Oil Com-, pany, Ltd., in the part of Lower Riccarton near to the Middleton. railway yards. This is an indication that this area is likely to become of increasing commercial importance. Mr' A. R. Brightmore has obtained a permit for the -erection of a brick shop at the corner of Cashel street anu Fitzgerald avenue for Mr Roberts. l : The large new garage in course of erection in Tuam street, opposite the Opera House, is being built for Mr F. O. Shaoklock by Mr W. Mullon./ Messrs J. Hammett and Son have Undertaken the erection of additions, in brick, to Taylor's Bagwash Works, 'Kilmbre street.
