CANTERBURY MARKETS

(B* OUR COMMERCIAL EDIT OB.) Tuesday Evening. There is still & dull tone about the entire market at present, and the volume of business being carried out is not nearly so large as is usually the ease at this season of the year. Wheat and Oats. There is a further slight easing in the market for oats, and the f.o.b, s.i. price for A Gartons is now 3s 10id. Prompt oats, however, at Lyttelton are very difficult to obtain. The Canterbury market is being affected by the prospective oats supply in the southern provinces. Keports to hand this week indicate that tho crop in the south is good, and so far practically the whole of it has been A's, which are quoted at 3s 10$ d, f.0.b., s.i. A very limited proportion of the oats has been threshed so far, but prospects of a good yield are reported to be bright. Wheat is still offering freely, but millers are not seeking supplies. Prices remain firm at Tuscan 5s 8d on tnicks, Hunters 5s lOd to 5s lid, and Pearl to 6s 2d. Fowl wheat is firm at 5s 10 f.o.b. and 5s did for forward delivery. Chaff. The demand for chaff is not strong, and since the last report prices have cased by 2s 6d a ton. Chaff is noyr quoted at £6 12s 6d a ton f.0.b., s.i., for prompt, which is equivalent to about £5 a ton on trucks. Potatoes. The potato market is also a little easier—by 2s 6d a ton. Potatoes are offering freely, and the yields of those dug are good, and fully up to expectations. There is enquiry for potatoes for prompt shipment to Auckland, and a few are going there by the Wingatui to-morrow. For prompt prices are from £4 15s to £4 17s 6d, : which is equal to about £3 12s 6d to £3 15s on trucks. "Values quoted to-day are:— April-June shipment, £4 12s 6d; AprilJuly, £4 15s; July-August-September, £5 12s 6d. Reports from Wellington are that that centre is still getting potatoes from the Manawatu district, where the crop this year was very good, and shows no signs of petering out for some time yet. On the other hand, the indications are that from now on Auckland will be requiring supplies from the South Island. Small Seeds. There is no change in the small seeds section of the market.

They went into immediate consumption end the wholesale market is again chiefly dependent upon Rangitikei supplies. These are selling at £8 5s per ton ex store. Advices from Canterbury are to the effect that the market there is weak, and it would appear that' comparatively low rates are likely to rulu for some time to come; Local- shops aro still chiefly supplied with potatoes grown in this province, ■ Onions are still being traded in at unusually l° w values, which should have, the effect of stimulating consumption.
