CANCER APPEAL.

MEETING AT NEW BRIGHTON. A public meeting was held in the Pre* mier Picture Theatre last night, the Mayor of Brighton (Mr J. H. Shaw) presiding. Mr Shaw said he was sorry to see 86 few of the residents present. The idea of the meeting was to obtain membership for the campaign, and so obtain more funds for the purchase of radium for the cure of cancer. Dr, W. E. Stevens would tell them of tho technical side of the disease. Dr. Stevens said that the fight against the fell disease was one in which everyone should take part. One person in every twelve died of cancor. The disease was an overgrowth. All the glands of the body, were lined with epithelium cells, which multiplied at a terrific rate, and grew bigger and bigger crushing the smaller cells. It was said by some that cancer was a germ—wqll, perhaps it was.

Constant Irritation of a part of the body would cause cancer. A man smoking a clay pipe for a long time continually would possibly bring about cancer of the tongue or lips.To prevent cancer we must stop all forms of irritation. The rougher the food we put into our stomachs the more likely we were to induce the disease. The greatest care should be taken in eating cooked fish. Some th«3re are who advocated raw whisky as being good for cancer. That was an absolute fallacy, for there was nothing worse. Cancer of the skin could easily be cured by the application of X-rays and radium, and we must collect more money so that we could have more radium. While we were subjected to the rough food We have to live on to-day we shall nhvavß be subject to cancer. As to the disease being horeditary, that was a moot question, and no one had aa yet been able to decide it.
