TURF GOSSIP. Nominations for the Waimate Bacing Club's Annual Meeting will close at 8 p.m. to-day. Acceptances for the Marlborough Racing Club's Summer Meeting will close to-day. Waterline can boast of a solid staying pedigree. His sire, The Ace, is by Bayardo (son of Bay Ronald) from IJsaa, by Knight of Malta (son of Galopin), while on the side of the dam (Sailor's Hope) there are two strains of Musket, one through Maxim and the other through Trenton. Sailor's Hope is by Treadmill (son of Bill of Portland) from Fairhaven, by Pilgrim's Progress (son of Isonomy). Waterline figures in the nominations for the Trentham Gold Cup, and also remains in the St. Leger Stakes. The following penalties have been Incurred for the Banks Peninsula Meeting on Saturday: —Peninsula Cup, Marsham 71b; Kinloeh Handicap, Silver Coot 71b; Forsyth Handicap, Noteworthy 71b.. Mr H. E. Connop has been appointed starter for the Wairarapa Bacing Club's Easter Meeting. T. Webster made an effective return to form at Woodville, where he rode four winners. This promising lad has been through a trying experience, and it is pleasing to see that he ' has lost none of his ability. Limosin has proved a great bargain »n the 80gns he fetched at the Trentham sales twelve months ago. He is a shining example that defects (he had a twisted foot) do not always hamper a horse's galloping ability, and that age often effects a cure.

Goblin Market ran good races at Woodville, but his double effort on the second day did not produce the results desired. It should not be long, however, before he returns some of his purchase money.

The Kinloch-bred Little Mart, by Martian from Mazabnka, now in her seventh year, retains her form well in Australia, as she figured as a winner at the Ascot pony races last month, starting as a staunch favourite. Thespian (Absurd—Leta) was a firstclass horse, and, although he was not a stayer, his form, up to a mile and a quarter was of the best. Becognising his merit as a racehorse, Mr Currie has given him an opportunity at the stud. So far his stock have not greatly distinguished themselves, but there is a notable exception, and thiat is Habit. This mare, who is out of the dam of the brilliant Eational, has improved out of all knowledge since E. J. Murtagh took her over, and there does not seem .any reason why she should not go on and reach really good-class. She has a stride that; just eats up the ground, and while she may, like her sire, be troubled by a bit of ground, she is ■brilliant enough to suggest a really good handicap in the near future. As a result of having: eaten sheep dip powder in a shed at Cootpmundra (New South Wales), the Paper Money mare Short, Order and a foal gelding died from poisoning. Short Order,' who had been placed in a paddock preparatory to i being put into work,. was owned by Wallace Forbett, and was successful in Sydney last year, when Bhe defeated Baisin at Bosehill. Hunting Cry's brother, Merry Cry, eontesteiF the two-year-old races at Woodville, but he did not show up. The family resemblance is noticeable so far lis looks go. With Merry Damon and Merry Melody, G. 'W. New now has two of the progeny of Merry Boe in his stable. Merry Melody is a brother to Merry Mint, but is a much more compactly built sort. He showed promise at Woodville and should not be long in the maiden ranks.

TROTTING NOTES.

Nominations for the New Brighton Trotting Club's Autumn Meeting close on Thursday, at 12 noon. Logan Way, who raced at Kaikoura en Saturday, is a more than useful gelding by Logan Pointer from "Wayside, and if trained ou metropolitan courses he would more than pay his way. He is six yearß old and he should have a lot of good, racing in front of Mm. Pro Rata has been penalised 5i4 yards for the Wairewa Trot at the Banks Peninsula Meeting. White Satin by this time must have proved a payable proposition to the Auckland owner, Mr Geo. McMillan, for it' is understood that her winnings to date, s' £404, . practically provide her purchase money. The three-year-old on 'Saturday, in registering 3.31 4-5, brotoj her own record, for unhoppled three-year-olds, established when at Forbury Park »he did 3.35 3-5. The present record held by White Satin is not nearly her best, and D. Warren, her early trainee and E. B. Berry, who Eas had her since November last, must be given credit for hand- j ling the greatest trotter of her age •ver known in New Zealand.

Experiences at the Kaikoura Meeting on Saturday have awakened in some trainers an idea that the starting at trotting meetings might be improved a good deal. With the lack of modern appliances at Kaikoura it was not surprising to find some of the starts irregular, although J. H. Tompkins did his best with the material at hand. The starter a work altogether was good, but those most concerned are of the opinion that elastic instead of worsted should _ be used to start the raoes. It is explained that most of the horses in their training nro expected to start from a barrier that goes with a snap. Several trainers .spoken to yesterday suggested that the Banks Peninsula Racing Club, which is to race on Saturday next, should introduce elastic in placo of the worsted generally used. They are of the opinion that elastic should bo provided. Worsted is inclined to float in the air after being released, but as practically every horse is trained to Btart from an elastic barrier the club would be doing the right thing in introducing an innovation that would meet with the approval of all trainers whose horses have been taught to go from a barrier. There may be an excuse on Saturday next, for the Rules of Trotting state that "in all cases where clubs do not use a starting machine, the horses shall be dispatched by the use of worsted suspended across the various marks at the start of the race." Even if the Banks Peninsula Club cannot arrange to provide elastic instead of worsted, a note in the suggestion book of the New Zealand Trotting Association might bring results at the next Trotting Conference.
