A REFERENDUM.
N.S.W. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. REFORM PROPOSALS. (UNITED pbbss association*—bx tlictric TELEGRAPH —COPYRIGHT.) (Received February 14th, 1.20 a.m.) SYDNEY, February 13. Tho State Legislative Assembly, in Committee to-night, agreed to holding a referendum on May 3rd, on a proposal to reform the Legislative Council. Labour members sought to have the referendum put off until tho general election at the end of the year, contending that this would save a considerable sum of money. The Premier (Mr T. E. Bavin), however, was afraid that if Labour was returned, an attempt would be made to abolish the Upper House altogether, as was tried some years ago by Mr J. T. Lang. In to-night's division, the voting was equal, the Government being victorious only by means of the casting vote of the Chairman of Committees.
