LONDON, February 12,
"I deprecate most strongly the suggestion contained in the present flood of war books that the people who fought in the Great War were either drunkards or cowards," said Lieut.Colonel B. C. Freyberg, V.C., a New Zealander, in a speech at Folkestone. "These, who were grown up when the war was raging, knew that these allegations are not true, but the younger generation might well believe that recent . books presented a faithful picture," he said. Lieut.-Oolonel Freyberg declared that throughout the war he saw only five "drunks," and he did not believe a solitary man was shot for cowardice. Soldiers' language might be rough, but thousands of great-heart-ed men wore risking their lives daily. These war books were written from an entirely wrong angle.
