MID-CANTERBURY

ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. Commissioner J. Cunningham, Chief of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, accompanied by Colonel D. Gunn, Field Secretary of !New Zealand. Salvation Army work,; and Brigadier F. Burton of Christchurch, will arrive in Ashburton this afternoon. The former who will be the guest of the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs R. Galbraith) during his stay in Ashburton, will be tendered a reception in the local Salvation Army Barracks this evening.

School Picnic. Ideal weather was experienced yesterday for the annual picnic of the Ashburton Borough School to Timaru, when about 500 children, parents, and friends left by the special excursion train. Motor-cycle Club. Th° committee of the Ashburton MotorCycle" Club met on Tuesday niglit, when the president (Mr G. T. Clarke) presided. Two new members were elected. _ - An invitation was received from the South Canterbury Motor-cycle Club to its run to Waimate on February 16th. The results of the half-day sporting trial are as follows:—!). K. McKendry 1, T. Farley and. M. Hopkins (equal) 2, G, Hefford 3. . . The secretary was instructed to enquire from other clubs as to what constituted a trade rider and a private owner. The conditions and points in connexion with the Preddy Cup, which is to be competed for annually, are as follows:—(1) The rider gaining the most points in the cup competition throughout tho season is to hold the cup for one year; (2) trade riders are excluded from competing for the cup; (3) when points for the cup are to be allotted, the cards sent to members will be so stamped. Points: First, 8 points; second, 5 points; third, 3 points. The following half-yearly programme was drawn up and approved:—January 26th: Run to Timaru. February 9th: Half-day sporting trial. Meet water-tower 1.30 p.m. •February 23rd: Pillion trial to mouth of Ratnia river, leaving Racecourse corner at 9.30 a.m. March 9th: Spiorts meeting at H. Brown's, leaving traffic bridge at 9.30 a.m. March 23rd: Run to Rangitata mouth. April 6th: Hill climb. May 4th: Eight-hour trial. May 18th: Acceleration race and flexibility trial. June Bth: Paper chase. June 21st: Annual dance.

Bowling. The Allenton Bowling Club will be represented by the following rinks in the match with the Ashburton Olub on Saturday:—J. M. Wilkie, E. 0. Bathurst, R. W. Barr, W. Hedges (s); T. Clayton, T.
