INSPECTION OF CADETS.

CAMPBELL STATUETTE CONTEST At Hagley Park last evening "C" Company of the 4th Cadet Battalion, the unit representing Canterbury District in the competition for the Campbell was inspected by . a special Board from General Headquarters. The Campbell Statuette, offered for annual competition among non-sec-ondary school cadet companies, is awarded for general efficiency, judged on the following basis: —Inspection for general neatness, turn-out on parade,, etc., 100 points; Musketry, including results of the range course, 200 points; physical training, 100 points, and infantry drill, 100 points. In order to be eligible for the competition, more than 85 per cent, of the must appear on parade on the occasion of inspection. The inspecting Board, which is the same also for competing companies in the. North Island, comprises LieutenantColonel E. B. Smythe, D.5.0., Captain K. J. Walker, and Captain M. A. Stedman, M.C. Officers of "C" Company, on parade yesterday evening were Captain L. B. Austen, 0.C., and Lieutenants D S. Boyd, S. J. Tempro, E. L. Simson, and J. G. Fraser. Lieutenant-Colonel W. W. McKinney, in charge of the 4th Cadet Battalion, was an interested spectator. The company assembled at the King Edwaftl Barracks and marched to the Park, where the platoons fell in separately, and were marched on to the parade ground by their n.c.o.'s. The parade was inspected by the members of the Board, and some company drill followed. After this .. the individual pl&toons were each devoted to one type of work, so that at the seme time musketry instruction, physical training, and drill were being engaged in. The most notable feature of this part of the parade was the way in which the instruction was'being carried out by the cadet n.c.o.'s, who were assisted neither by the Staff Sergeant-Major nor by their own officers. It was explained that this was the main object of the competition—to proyide added incentive for the eadet n.c.o.'s to make themselves thoroughly efficient.
