THE FIXTURES. The following dates have been fixed for the Ewe Fairs to be held in Canterbury during March:— March 3—Amberley. March 6—-Hawarden. March 10—Little River. March 11—Waiau. . March 13—Culverden. March 14—Methven. March 17—Tinwald. | March 18—Sheffield. March 21—Mt. Somers. March 24—Oxford. March 25—Coalgate. March 28—Kakaia.
Bam Fairs. March 19-—Ashburton. March 20 and 21—Christehureh, March 28—Timaru.
An English business man who has been visiting Southland was shown over the freezing works at Mataura. 'I was really surprised by my visit," he said. "Killing operations were over for the day when we arrived, but ■wo were courteously received and shown over the premises. I took particular notice of the brand, 'Super Canterbury,' being put on the carcases, as all New Zealand mutton is sold in England as 'prime Canterbury,' but that is all for the beet, because the public knows that 'Canterbury mutton comes from New Zealand while if the frozen meat was branded with the name of its particular province it would not get a hearmg. 'Canterbury' mutton is much sought after, and is grades ahead of Argentine mutton, which is pale and stringy When we get back Home we will always endeavour to procure buper Canterbury' mutton with the Crossed Keys' brand, which is, I have been told, the insignia of the Mataura Works." The visitor was equally frank about Canterbury in the j ter -?! climate and other odds and ends "Truly New Zealand would be an ideal country if it could eliminate canterbury nor'-westers and earthquakes," he remarked.
An "eat more potatoes" campaign has been started by Arbroath (Scotland) farmers. A speaker at the meeting said that he expected the price or potatoes would drop to under £1 a ton. With oats selling at 20s a quarter (2/6 a bushel) Scottish farmers are having a. i eßn time,
