PLUNKET SHIELD.

WELLINGTON V. OTAGO.

M'GIRR AND BADCOCK BAT WELL

(FBESa ASSOCIATIO* TBLXQKAM.) DUNEDIN, January 31. In dull and showery weather the I Plunket Shield game between Otago and Wellington was commenced on Carisbrook ground to-day. Light rain fell during the greater part of the day, with a heavy fall in the afternoon, which caused an adjournment of an hour and a half. Alloo lost the toss, and Lowry, the Wellington skipper, elected to bat. The wicket was easy and the conditions of plav fairly good all day. McGirr played a fine innings for 73, but he should have been disposed of when he was 35. He was at all times sound and correct, and sometimes he showed flashes of forceful play. The best display of the day was that of Badcock, who compiled 62 in 72 minutes. He scored equally well on the leg and off, and his timing was perfect. When stumps were drawn the visitors had lost nine wickets for 283 runs. The best bowler of the day was Lemin, who proved a tower of strength to the home side, taking four wickets for 61. Wellington Batting. Baker and Foley opened for Wellington, Baker taking strike to Dunning, whose fourth ball was the batsman's downfall, being snicked into Knight's hands in the slips —an easy catch. 4—l Hollings was next man in and played out the over. Elmes was the other bowler. Ten came up after 15 minutes' play, and 30 came up after 40 minutes' play, Lemin having by this time replaced Elmes. Maidens were frequent, but the score crept up by twos and singles. Hollings pulled a ball to leg, but slipped and dislodged a bail, and the umpire gave him out as the result of an appeal, but after some conversation between the umpire and the players the batsman was allowed to remain. He had knocked the bail off after the completion of the stroke. Foley fell to the home slow bowler, Moloney, a few minutes later, his stumps being skittled after he had been at the wickets for 80 minutes for 15 Tuns. Lowry joined Hollings. Just before the score reached 40 Lemin replaced Moloney, and his first ball Hollings played on to the wicket off his pads. Ho had batted 90 minutes for 46—a very impressive strike. 76—3—46. Bain Hampers Bowlers. Light rain now began to fall and sawdust was needed by the bowlers. Just as the century appeared on the board Lowry put his leg in front of one from Lemin and was given out lbw. Lemin had taken two for 17. 100 —t—l7. When the adjournment was taken Cameron, who followed Hollings, was 13. McGirr replaced Lowry and opened his account with a single. He got Lemin away for a couple and drove him for four, bringing 110 up. He reached double figures by driving Elmes to the fence and pulled one round for another four before the over finished. Lemin's Third Wicket. The first ball of Lemin's next over took the fifth wicket, Cameron playing one into the slips, where Elmes took a good catch. Lemin's tally was now three for 26. 123—5—17. At 2.12 a further adjournment was taken on account of rain, play being held up until 3.45. Ward, who had replaced Cameron, faced Shepherd, getting him away for a single. Each batsman got a single off Lemin's next over, and Shepherd's next was a maiden. With the score at 141 Ward received a ball from Lemin, which rose high on the off and he pulled it on to bia wicket. Lemin four for 35. 141—6—6. McGirr Missed. Lamason partnered McGirr, who was shaping exceedingly well. McGirr lifted Shepherd dangerously to the off for a single and reached 30 in this bowler's over. McGirr was 35 when he played Lemin into the slips. Knight got his hand on to the ball, but could not hold it. The batsman followed this with a nice pull to the leg boundary, reaching 40 and bringing 160 up. Both batsmen appeared to be well set, when Dunning bowled Lamason with a fine ball. 176—7—14. Badcock was applauded when he went to the wickets. He opened his account with a single, and McGirr reached 50 after 86 minutes' batting. Bidcock reached double figures in very short time, and 200 was not long in coming up. Badcock reached 20 with two nice drives to the fence. McGirr Bun Out. McGirr was 62 when he pulled a ball hard round to square leg, where Groves missed a hard catch. Both batsmen were now giving a good display of steady cricket, but McGirr's fine innings came to an end when Badcock played a ball from Alloo to McMillan. McGirr ran, but Badcock sent him back. McMillan's shot hit the wickets, however, before McGirr could get back and he was out. 235—8—73. Badcock Caught. Newman joined Badcock, who had scored 28. The latter drove Elmes for four and passed 30, bringing 240 up. He reached his half century after 65 minutes' batting by pulling Elmes to the fence, but he was not destined to go much farther. He lifted Dunning to the off, where Moloney took a fine catch. 276—9 —62. Henderson was last man in and played out the over. Cavanagh missed a good chance to dispose of Newman off the last ball of the day. When stumps were drawn the score was 283 for nine wickets. Scores:— WELLINGTON. First Innings.
