TURF GOSSIP.

The annual yearling sates will take place at Trentham to-day, and will be followed by the sale of older horses. The youngsters to be offered have attracted much attention, but it is not anticipated that any of the high prices ruling in recent years will be reached.

Great Star failed badly in the Metropolitan Handicap at Trentham yesterday. He had a clear advantage at the Straight entrance, but when expected to keep hia place stopped abruptly. Evidently he has had enough of racing for m while.

A southern buyer was after Head Seraag at Trentham yesterday, but the price, 1500 guineas, put a stop to negotiations.

Teheka ran an improved race in the January Handicap at Trentham yesterday, bat failed when pressure was applied in the straight.

Dun raven was proclaimed the win Mr of the Nursery Handicap, when he took charge at the distance post, but ran about a lot, and his rider wa3 •aable to keep him straight. H<? interfered with some of the other leaders, and this brought about an enquiry, but tile rider's explanation of the gelding's Waywardness was considered satisfactory. Dunraven's good showing indicated that he will come good with more lacing.

A. E. Ellis had a good innings at Trentham yesterday, piloting three winaers and two close seconds.

Pride is a better filly than generally considered, and with a stronger rider yesterday would have caused much More trouble to Bright Glow in the big yaee at Wellington. With the increased weight she will get in the Consolation Handicap to-morrow she will command a shorter price than the double figures Ac returned for second money yester-

Frond Knight ran a creditable race la the Camp Handicap at Trentham yesterday, and will not be long getting on. the winning list when smaller fields are encountered.

Straighteourse had a good following la his engagement at Trentham yesterday. He became prominent wide out mt the Straight entrance, but finished la the ruck.

Pangolin was very sore after his experieaee in the High-Weight Handicap at Trentham yesterday, and is not likely to start to-morrow.

The connexions of Master Clarence Were unfortunate in losing his services ia the High-Weight Handicap at WelUagtoa yesterday, as the race was run ia alow time, and his prospects would hare been favourable. It is hoped, kowever, to produce him to-morrow.

Night Lad did not look well when paraded for the January Handicap at xrentham yesterday, and raced aeeord-

TROTTING NOTES.

Nominations for the Australasian Championship close on Monday next with the secretary of the New Zealand Association. Acceptances for the Forbury Park Trotting Club's gammer Meeting close •b Friday. Nominations for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's Summer fleeting close at 12 noon on Thursday. There is a possibility that Logan Chief will be accorded a nomination in the Aastralasian Championship. Although a big pacer, Logan Chief is very handy, and the small track should suit as well as any of the others. He is good-mannered, and he travels well, wwrj desirable qualities in a horse for p nee of this description. Although the majority of events decided in West Australia are from a flatfooted start different conditions rule in connexion with the Australasian Championship, to be decided in March. In this race the horses will be dispatched from a moving-tip start, the pole horse to do the scoring. While the fiat-footed start eannot be improved upon so far as handicap events are concerned, a movettp start is quite suitable in races where all horses start off the same mark. There im a feeling in trotting circles in New Zealand that it would be an improvement if horses in the classic and Free for All races were sent away to a moving start.

When the Wellington Trotting Club held its Meeting at Hutt Park in November horses were required to race on a track that did not provide good going, This was only to be expected, for the contractors had no time to spare and consequently were not able to put the required work into the track to provide the ideal foothold. Since then, however, horses have worked regularly on the track and this, coupled with the persistent rolling, has improved the course a great deal. It is expected that Saturday's Meeting will see very fast times registered, for the track is reported to be in first-class order. It is shaped on much the same lines as the Addington course with long straights and well-rounded turns.

NOTES ON THE RACING.

King's Jest Improves. Master Clarence, who developed lameness over the week-end owing to a pricked foot, was withdrawn from the Mangaroa Highweight Handicap, for which Mister Gamp, who gave an encouraging display on the first day, was installed a two hundred ticket better favourite than King's Jest. The race was full of interest, and there were many changes in the leading division during the running. Pangolin was the first to pilot the field, but when Mothplane and Vivo drew up to him at the far turn he lost his place and gradually drifted back. Mothplane, Fine Acre, and Vivo were practically on terms entering the straight, closely followed by Marshain, Diana's Lad, and King's Jest. The contest looked very open at the distance, but King's Jest forged through a hundred yards off the post, and stalling off a strong challenge by Marsham, beat him by a length. Necka separated Marsham, Fine Acre, and Mister Gamp. The lastnamed only had one horse behind him at the home turn, but he executed some telling work in the straight. His run, however, was made too late. Pale Star. Diana's Lad, and Vivo were the next to finish. King's Jest found the distance more to his liking than on Saturday, and the same applied to Marsham, who appreciated the drier track. This was hig beßt race to date, and he might still make good after a long term in commission. Mister Gamp could not pace it with the field over the first half of the journey, and had considerable ground to make up from the turn for home. Pangolin wa« going well until he drifted back at the far turn, and it was discovered after the race that he had cut a tendon by striking himself.

A Chokebora Success.

Jaloux was considered the best proposition in the Trial Plate, being supported down to much less than even money. A surprise was in store for investors, ae the Clifford representative. Waterline, after getting away

slowlv mowed the field down in the straight and won in an attractive manner, dancing Star acted as pacemaker shortly after the start and led round the top from Ranelagh, Portray Thurso, and Manifesto. Dancing c v ... still in charge from a bunch entering tile straight, but retired at the com "lencement of the run homo, and Waterline appeared on the scene. He forged to the front inside the distance, and in spite of "ood finishing runs on the part of Jaloux, Gay Crest, and Portray he beat Jaloux by a jcn"th. '(?»y Crest was only a head away, with °Portray close up, and then followed Banbridgc, Auctioneer, Tourist, Ranelagh, Manifesto,' and Emotion. This was the winner's first appearance in public. He is a half-brother to Quarterdeck and gives promise of turning out a useful performer. He missed the jump out. but got a good run on the outside when the field settled down and was in behind the leaders at he home turn. His performance was thus full of merit. Jaloux also was badly treated at the start, and unlike Waterline was not well favoured over tho first couple of furlongs. He was not prominent until headed for home, and then executed a bold attempt to make up his ground. Gay Crest did his best work over the final stage-8 and raced up to his recent track work. Ranelagh stumbled badly at tho half-mile and interfered with Thurso, otherwise both, who occupied good positions at the time, would have done better. Great Charter Wins. Antique curried four hundred tickets more than Full Feather in the January Handicap, but neither raced up to expectations. Great Charter was the first prominent from The Hawk, Clarendon, Teri, and Ti Tree, but rounding the far turn Clarendon had taken charge from Tcheka, Joy Bird, Great Charter, Teri, and Make Up, with Night Lad and Full Feather at the tail of the field. Great Charter moved up at the home bend and followed Clarendon and Tcheka into the straight, followed by a bunch headed by Teri, Royal Came, Full Feather, arid Make Up. Great Charter drew away from the leaders inside the distance and was tackled by Teri, and in a good finish Great Charter prevailed by lialf a length. The Hawk made a gallant effort in the eloping stages and looked dangerous, but was usable to sustain his run, and was two lengths back in third place. Kory Mor, Chopin. High Falutin', Tcheka, Full Mark, Night Lad, Ti Tree, and Antique finished in that order. Great Charter showed a big improvement on his showing in the Telegraph Handicap, in which he was fifteenth choice. Teri also did better than on tho opening day, while The Hawk on a firmer track made a bold showing. lie was prominent early, and then drifted back, only to renew his effort in the last furlong. Antique was never prominent. Full Feather drew No. 1, but was soon in last place. He moved up rounding the home turn and was in .1 promising position entering the straight, but that was the end of him, and he was one of the last to finish. Improving Two-year-old. Despite the big weight Awaken was entrusted with most money in the Nursery Handicap and narrowly missed carrying her supporters through. When the field reached the course proper Arisus showed out in front from Princess Betty, Rapallo, Jenny Diver, Green Linnet, Awaken, and Dunraven. There was a change before the distance was reached, where Dunraven, Rapallo, and Jenny Diver were in command from a bunch. The winner was well concealed at this stage, and it was not until the last fifty yards that Green Linnet shot out and went on to win by half a length from Awaken, who, wide out, finished with a great burst and beat Jenny Diver by a neck for second money. Rapallo, Dunraven, and Appledore finished in Wne close up, and then came Princess Betty, Cessation, Petrarch, and Arisus, Green Linnet registered a good performance, and has gradually improved since racing iu Sydney in the spring. A Close Finish. In some even speculation on the Wellington Racing Club Handicap the public stuck to Star Stranger and Concentrate, only s«.venty tickets separating them, with Bright Glow and Goshawk six hundred tickets away. From a good start Concentrate had a slight advantage from Amor, Goshawk. Stanchion. Bright Glow, Latin Quarter, and Star Stranger. Going out of the straight Amor and Stanchion were together in front of Concentrate and Bright. Glow, but at the seven furlong post Ruanui took charge from Stanchion, White Fang, Amor, Bright Glow, Pride. Concentrate, Latin Quarter, Goshawk, and Star Stranger. While Fang »hot to the front at the home betid and led into the straight from Shrewd, Pride, Ruanui, Bright Glow, Latin Quarter, Star Stranger, and Concentrate. The field closed up when the serious stage commenced, with Pride showing out in front at the distance. Bright Glow moved up on the rails in the last hundred yards and she and Pride engaged in a hard tussle. Bright Glow gettin? home by half a length. Latin Quarter was two lengths back ill front of Star Stranger, Goshawk, Shrewd, In the Shade, Concentrate, Amor, Stanchion, and Ruanui, with White Fang last. Bright Glow, who was well treated in the handicap after her recent efforts, won well, and horsemanship had a lot to do with the result. Pride was not well served by her rider in the run home, and with a more experienced boy in the saddle would have reserved the positions. The three favourites raised the hopes of their admirers in the last furlong, but failed to run 011. Concentrate did not have the smooth passaee he enjoyed in the Cup, and after being badly treated in his place on the rails he was taken to fho outside, and thus covered a lot of extra ground. Latin Quarter again did well without being made so much use of as on the first day. Amor was also kept in behind the leaders, but his hopes were shattered by being sent back at the half-mile. A Family Duel. The large field of twenty-two paraded for the Douro Cup Handicap, and in a pool totalling £7500 Head Serang carried 500 tickets more than were entrusted to Disorder, with a big break to Rational 11. and Te Awhina, who were separated by only nine tickets. Another even dispatch was effected, the first to show out being Cuticle and Pedestal, but at the end of two furlongs 'Rational 11. was out in front from Te Awhina, Limosin, Cuticle, Pedestal, and Head Serang. Limosin took up the running at the far turn from Rational 11., Grecian, and Te Awhina, and as the straight was reached Grecian was in charge from Rational 11., Limosin. and Te Awhina. Rational 11. and Te Awhina drew away from the field inside the distance, and in a neck-and-neck tussle to the post between the Kllis brothers Rational 11. stayed on the better to win by half a length. This pair outclassed the field over the final stages, the third horse, Pahu, being three lengths away, half a length in front of Grecian, with Patearoa, Pedestal, Prince of Orange, My Own, Kiriana, and Head Serang following in that order. The race was not as interesting as the field suggested, as there was no doubt as to the devi-dend-payers once the distance post was reached. Rational 11. is a powerful galloper with a strong rider up, and will go far in more important events later. Te Awhina ran up to her recent track essays, and wag unlucky to encounter the winner. Head Serang ran much below his first day's form, and at no stage looked like a winner. The same remark applied to Disorder, who made a promising run from the back rounding the home turn, but disappeared in the straight.

Favourite Prevails. Mervette was in strong demand for the Metropolitan Handicap, and she was the first favourite to win at the meeting. When the field reached the course proper (Jreat Star had charge from Aspiring, Royal Saxon, Mervette, and Cimabue. In an interesting struggle Mervette was always a winner, and had two lengths to spare at the post from Cimabue, who finished with a rattle and beat Aspiring by a similar margin. Royal Saxon was close up next, and was followed by Meadow Lark, Panther, Leader, Richfield, Goblin Market, and Great Star. The winner's performance exemplified the bad luck she had on the first day. She commands a rare turn of speed, and will win again soon. Cimabue put in some solid work in the last furlong. Aspiring ran a great race, but weakened in the last few strides. Meadow Lark started on the outside, and although his colours were prominent at the false rail he took no part in the final struggle. Richfield was disappointing, and never got near the front. A Close Call. Havaspot was made the biggest favourite of the day in the Camp Handicap, and his supporters had to be content with a small second dividend. Dutch Money, who started wide out, held the position on the fence at the false rail in behind Kahu Ariki and Habit. She had this pair beaten at the distance, and was challenged by the favourite in the run home. The latter endeavoured to get up on the inside of the Riccarton filly, but was unable to get through until too late, and Dutch Money squeezed home by a head. Habit was half a length away, in front of Ex Dono, Glenrossie, Proud Knight, and Spearful, all of whom passed the post in a line. Dutch Money won well, but had to be vigorously ridden to beat the unlucky favourite.
