PERSONAL. (SPECIAL TO THE PRESS.) GREYMOUTH, January 5. Mr and Mr 3 Phil Anderson, former residents of Greymouth, now of Invercargill, are spending a motoring holiday on the West Coast. Mr and Mr 3 L. Green, who have been visiting friends in Greymouth, returned yesterday to Dunedin. Dr. P. J. McEvedy, who has been visiting Greymouth, returned yesterday to Wellington. Mr and Mrs J. Dunlop, who have been spending a holiday at Bell Hill, returned yesterday to Christchurch. Mr W. Hannam left yesterday for Hamilton, where his marriage is to take place. Miss Ailsa Dillon, who has been visiting friends in Greymouth, returned yesterday to Wellington. Miss L. Markland left yesterday on holiday to the Chatham Islands. Mr T. Cagney, who has been spending a holiday in Canterbury, returned yesterday to Hokitika. Miss Joan Kiely arrived yesterday on holiday from Auckland. Misses N. and F. Hopkins arrived yesterday from Wellington on a visit to their mother. Mr and Mrs J. R. Meadows arrived yesterday from Dunedin. Car in Trouble. While fording the Pororari Tiver on the coastal road on Friday morning early a car got into deep water, the driver being unaware that a new fording place had been made away from the new bridge now under construction. The services of Mr H. V. Mathias, a resident in the locality, were requisitioned. He hauled the car out with the aid of a horse and chains. Through one of the chains snapping the swingletree struck Mr Mathias on the head, inflicting a painful injury and rendering him unconscious for some time. It was necessary to obtain medical aid. Block of Shops Sold. Messrs Beath and Co., Ltd., of Christchurch, have acquired the block of shops in Mackay street known as Smith's Buildings, a portion of which is occupied by the firm's Greymouth branch. It is understood that extensive remodelling operations will be put in hand immediately to provide more space for Beath and Company's business. Adjoining the firm's premises are McKay's sample rooms, which are being pulled down, the ground being required for the erection of a suite of shops and offices by a Greymouth syndicate. Accident to Steamer. While the s.s. Mako was swinging to a lower berth yesterday morning at the Grey wharf she grounded astern, her bow swinging in and striking the Orepuki on the starboard bow. The impact drove the fluke of the Orepuki's anchor into the Mako above the water line. The hole was patched during the morning by the Dispatch Foundry Company's staff. Fire in Foot-Warmer Shed. A fire was discovered yesterday morning early in the Westport Railway Station foot-warmer shed. The fire extended to the coal and oil store, which was completely destroyed, the prompt action of the Fire Brigade preventing the fire from extending to other buildings. The Weather. Heavy rain set in last night and continued till early this morning. For the twenty-four hours up to 9 a.m. to-day 123 points were registered. The rain appears to have been general, and caused the rivers to flood heavily, there being a six-knot current. in the . Grey river all to-day. Sain ceased about nine this morning, since when there has been sunshine. The sea on the Grey bar is heavy.
