ATHLETICS.
INVITATION TO OSBORNE RENEWED. (UNITED PEES 9 ASSOCIATION— BY ELECTRIC TELEGBAPH—COPYRIGHT.) (Received January sth. 6.5 p.pi.) NEW YORK, January 8. The secretary, Mr Ferris, of the Amateur Athletic Union lias stated that he had received a cablegram from the Australian athletic authorities, inviting Osborne, who had previously cancelled rjis visit on the grounds of his wife's illness, to come on the- Makura on February 19th. The Illinois Athletic Club, of Chicago, of which Osborne is a member, etatod that he was sailing by the Niagara on January Bth. Efforts to reach Osborne had been unsuccessful, and it is stated that his wife and he are out of the city. Mr Ferris has telegraphed to Osborne asking for definito information and his plans. NO WORD FROM OSBORNE. (Received January 4th, 11 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 4. Mr Ferris declared that the correct reading of the Australian cablegram apparently indicated that the Australian athletic authorities asked whether Osborne was on the Makura, which sailed on December 25th. Mr Ferris stated that he believed not, since he had had no word from the Matson Line officials to that effect. He added that his own efforts to get in touch with the athlete were still unsuccessful.
