FIRES.
BUILDING DAMAGED
(FRZBS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.» WHANGAREI, January 4. Fire in the upper floor of Wallace's Buildings, Cameron street, at 1.30 this morning caused damage to the extent of £IOOO. One office was gutted and several other offices and the Ritz restaurant, on the same floor, suffered through smoke and water. On the ground floor the stock of Wallace's grocery and Crosby's millinery shop was extensively spoiled by water. The block is owned by Schischka, Ltd., Auckland. The insurances aro unavailable. SCRUB FIRE. The New Brighton Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to a call from South Brighton on Saturday afternoon and suppressed a scrub fire at Blake street. But for the brigade's efforts serious results might have eventuated.
A mantelpiece in a house occupied bv Mrs I. M. Cooper, 23 Peacock street, St Albans, caught fire yesterday afternoon. The Central Fire Brigade were soon on the spot, and extinguished the blaze before much harm was done It is understood that Mrs Cooper was out at the time, and a spark from the grate caused the fire, which was discovered by a neighbour, who gave the alarm. The house is owned by Mr S. G. Unwin, of Mount Pleasant, and the furniture is insured for £l5O. The estimated damage is £5.
