NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

* It will be high tide on the beach this morning at 7.3 o'clock and in the rivei at 8.16 o'clock, and to-morrow at 7.41 a.m. and 8.52 a.m. respectively. To-night brings to a close Isew Brighton's nine days' and nights' carmva , the ultimate success of which is due in no small measure to the Town Clerk (Mr C. T. Middleton), who was the carnival secretarv, and to the Major (Mr J. H. Shaw). Except for two or three hours' rain one day, the weather has been ideal, and many thousands visited the show. A record number or motor-cars visited the carnival, but there were no accidents. The Borough Inspector (Mr Blewitt) reports that certain individuals are going about the streets and sandhills and on the beach posing as the inspector and demanding money from those who were unwittingly breaking the bylaws, with a threat that failure of payment would be followed by prosecution. The Rev. C. W. I. Maclaverty is staying at North-East Valley, Dunedin, and will probably be in charge of the church in that parish for some four weeks. The Rev. K. D. Andrews Baxter, of NorthEast Valley Church, is in charge of St. Faith's, pending the vicar's return. Dr. W. E. Stevens returned from his visit to South Canterbury yesterday. Miss C. Weavers is on a visit to Wellington. Mr and Mrs F. Muirson and family are holiday making. North Beach. In consequence of the favourable weather there were a great number of visitors to North Beach on Sunday last, and on Monday and Tuesday. On New Year's Day numbers came down to the beach in the forenoon, but the trams and buses were unable to cater for the exodus, when heavy rain set in. The commodious shelter at the Peace Memorial Hall was availed of by those unable to return to their homes. Good progress is being made with the preparation of the ground for the ninehole course on the west side of Norton street. The removal of sandhills has made the business premises on Bowhill road plainly visible from Park road and Sinclair street. The reticulation of the water supply for the links is well under way. Several of the roads in North Beach have since the recent rains got into a bad state. Osborne terrace in particular, which a few months ago was in very good order, is now in a very poor condition, pot-holes having shown themselves every few yards. Wainoni road, which was tar-sealed by the Heathcote County Council, is standing up to the large amount of traffic very well. The Bower Bridge urgently needs widening, and the willows in the New Brighton Domain require to be cut back again, in order to render it safe for motorists approaching the Bower Bridge. The North Beach Surf Club will hold a carnival on Saturday, January 18th.
