NEW PLYMOUTH, January X '"He has been on an orgy of fraud," t.aid Detective Moiklojohn, when Hec--lor Albeit Stewart was charged with obtaining credit by fraud. Stewart opened a catering business when he arrived in Xew Plymouth. Ho hired a car for a period, and paid for it by a valueless cheque for £'2o. He hired another car, arranging to return it, lut instead he drove witli a companion to "Wanganui, Palnierston North, Hamilton, and Auckland, -ahere he was ar-ested at the Ambassadors Hotel. Both men were taken to Wanganui and admitted to probation for twelve months for obtaining credit bv fraud.r The following day Stewart was rearrested ami sentenced to twelve months' reformative detention for false pretences. The detective alleged that in all towns visited Stewart had issued cheques. Before leaving New Plymouth lie had issued many, and it must have been apparent to bin) that he would land in trouble. Stewart attributed bis trouble to business failure, and alleged that his partner had not kept his promises. The detective added that the police could have brought a number of other charges. The Sentence was three months' hard labour concurrently with the existing term. , t
