ESCAPE FROM DROWNING.

THREE BATHERS RESCUED.

AUCKLAND, December 30.

Three bathers had a narrow escape from drowning in che surf at Scott's Point at the northern end of Ninety Mile Beach on Boxing Day. A party, consisting of Messrs W. Berridge, manager of the Bank of Australasia, Kaitaia; A. W. Adams, of the clerical staff of ihe hank; D. Buckie, a member of the Mangonui County Council staff; and Cavaye, accountant of the Bank of Australasia, Mangcnui, went in surf bathing. Buckle went out as far as the last breaker and Cavaye, who saw that lie was getting in a dangerous position, called out, but Buckle did not hear. Cavaye then went to his assistance and also got into difficulties in the undertow. Berridge went to Cavaye's assistance, but he_ too, got into trouble and could not make headway toward shore. Adams, who had just entered the water and who is a powerful and experienced swimmer, went to Buckle and after a great struggle got him ashore, where he fell down exhausted Adams again entered the water to rescue Cavaye and Berridge. With the assistance of Berridge he got Cavaye ashore in the last stages of exhaustion.

Adams behaved with the greatest courage, and had it not been for his experience in the sea the other three would assuredly have been drowned.
