BATHER IN TROUBLE.
INCIDENT AT SUMNER. At 4.10 p.m. yesterday the Sumner Lifeboat Institute's siren sounded to summon assistance tor a bather who was seen to be in difficulties east of .Mussel Rock, near Cave Rock. In a few minutes it appeared that thousands of people lined tlie shore while many made the Cave Hock their vantage point. A young man who had been bathing on the pier side of the Cave Hock found that he was unable to make his way to the shore against the strong current. He soon drifted round to the east side of Cave Rock, and was able to reach land. There was a very heavy sea running at the time and a strong undertow made bathing conditions rather dangerous. When he found that he had drifted into the rougher water caused by the meeting of the two currents, he was fortunately able to touch the bottom. In this he was distinctly hulcy wince lie had touched the sand which comprise* the shore bank of a channel. Although somewhat exhausted, he was none thf wor<e for this adventure and did not nc<xl the assistance of a younger man who gallantly went to his aid. An occurrence such as this would indie ate that a reel should be a permanent fixture ih this vicinity. Members of the Surf" Hub had to run some distance dragging a reel behind them, and in consequence, arrived verr much out of breath, b.-t fortunately to find that their assistance nas not required.
