EXCURSIONS BY TRAIN.
RECORD NUMBER FOR TIMARU. A record number of passengers travelled to Timaru on the Railway Department's two special excursion trains yesterday, but although the early morning in Christchurch was fine, the trains arrived in Timaru in. pouring tain. It was not until tiie afternoon that the downpour abated, but the town rapidly dried up. and the holidaymakers soon made themselves apnarent on the beach and esplanade. The number of passengers wlio took advantage of the cheap trips yesterday were as follows: First Timaru train ... 6*io Second Timaru train ... 070 Timaru to Christchurch ... 270 All trains left on time, the first train from Christchurch leaving at 8 o'clock in the morning, and the second at 9.10. Next Sunday the Railway Department are going to experiment with an excursion to the Waimakariri Gorge. This train will be of extra length, and its will drop its passengers at the Waimakariri Bridge. Two engines will be utilised to carry the heavy load, one A.B. tvpe in the front, and an N. type at the rear to take the strain. The fares will be 7s first-class, and 4s 9d second-class, -ind passengers may book from all stations on the line.
