The Tecent trans-Atlantic -voyage of the West Alsek. which ended on August 17th, would appear to have been an unqualified success. It will' be remembered that tho West Alsek wJs fitted with the Todd Unit System of pulverised fuel firing, and the owners, tho United States Shipping Boarl. state that as a direct result of this system there was a definite saving in cost per fuel mile, and an increase of 9 per cent, in tho average speed of tho ship. Moreover, the owners state that tho performance of the coal pulverising machinery was satisfactory in every way. and it is anticipated that on subsequent voyages the first voyage performance will be very much improved upon, as this voyage was to ?. large degree in the nature of an experimental trip, six different grades of coal being bunkered and actuai'y burned.

| An increase of 9 per cent, in ilie average i speed required ail increase of 20.2 per cent, in the propelling: pouer, while only 2.19 p<T cent, of the total horse-power was used by the «, pulverising mills, elevators, crushers, scre\? | conveyor, and magnetic separators, and the total steam consumed by all the coal-burning I gear vas only 5.36 per cent, of the totjil I evaporation of all boilers. The actual savins j in cost per fuel mile irHcn the ship doea an I equal amount of work, burning pulverised coil j as compared Trith a hand-fired job, was lourid to be 38.9 per cent. While the saving in timo J on the steamin? distance of 6HID miles bei tween New York to Glasgow and Cardiff to • Baltimore, under pulverised coal firing, was j 59.5 hour?, the savins in cost 1421.07 dol- ! lars. and the necessary 1C66.6 tons of coal I for the same time represent a sav- { ing in weight of 5.23 per cent. | SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. i LONDON. How many of those wlio find pleasure in chrysanthemums are aware that the first of the species ever grown in England is still on exhibition! The plant, one of the small yellow-flowered variety, was reared at* the Botanic Gardens, ' Chelsea, 1764, and Philip Miller, the famous gardener, preserved some of the flowers. The plant itself died after flowering only once, but one of the pre- | served blossoms found its way to the | herbarium of the British Museum, where 1 it may still be seen.
