Tn addition to a substantial rise in the totalisator Tf-ceipts, the gate proceeds advanced £.84 on last year's -figure? for the corresponding da; . The success of Smithereens in the Kettle Memorial <"up gave Mr E. V,. Snencer, president of the Reeiton •Jockey Ciufi, a popular victory. A cup presented rs R. Ivettle was a;tu f *hfd to the stake, and this was ~r r. ,f ntf-d after the race to Mr Spercer by Mr T. K. Coatee, president of the i ; .-pyniouth CJub. A similar ceremony tcok pl3<*e at thf conclusion of the Paroa Hack Handicap, when a cup given by Mr C. Calvert to the winner of that race was handed to H. Nurse, who received it on behalf of Mr G. G. Holme?, owner of Huntley. Zeuxis was unlucky not to have won the hurdle race at Grey mouth on Saturifav. Ho reproduced his old habit of boring out and ran on the outside of Thf track practically throughout. This not only meant a lot of extra ground, but the going was heavier wide out than near the rails. He should make amends on Wednesday. Danthonia had bis first start in a hurdle race at Greymouth on Saturday and also had bis first fall at his first fence. He and Deluge were abreast racing to the obstacle, and the latter bore in on him so badly that Danthonia had little chance of making an accurate .jump. His rider, J. W. Jennings, received an injury to the head and mouth, but was able to ride Gold Well in the next race. Solgele ran a good race in the Borough Handicap at Omoto on Saturday, but the distance was beyond him. He was brought back to Ricearton yesterday and will leave to-day for the Waikouaiti Meeting, at which he is engaged in a five furlong race. As a result of her mishap at Hokitika, Turnover was sent home to Ricearton on Saturday. Kentish Lady had every chance in her engagement at the Greymouth Meeting. She was one of the leaders to > the far turn, but then gave np the | tussle and gradually drifted back to last place. She can gallop on the tracks, but as a racing proposition she has been an expensive failure.

Moratorium found the traek at Omoto to his liking, and Ma task in the High-Weight Handicap was easy. He is to contest the Greymouth Cup on Wednesday and will have to be considered. There was no excuse for Gold Mint in his race at Greymouth on Saturday. He trot away well and had a clear run throughout, bnt was not good enough on the day. He will benefit by the two races he has had on the circuit and may make a return before the trip concludes.

Ohickwheat was the tlrst away in the Brunner Handicap at Omoto on Saturday, but did not hold his position very long, drifting back during the middle stages. He was hard ridden rounding the top turn and into the straight without making much headway, but halfway down the running he settled down to a telling finishing run and was galloping the best of the plaee-getters at the finish. He would probably have won if he hatf decided to make his tffort- earlier.

Page Boy was well beaten by Huntley in the Paroa Hack Handicap at lireymouth on Saturday, but he would have made the winner's task harder but for meeting with trouble going out of the straight. He and Huntley -were racing abreast when The Dove shot across them on to the rails, Page Boy being the worse sufferer and losing ground. E. Orange, rider of The Dove, was hailed before the Judicial Committee and ordered to stand down for the remainder of the day. The Wellington owner, Mr W. H. Ballinger, had four horses racing at both the Hokitika and Gr©ymouth Meetings, bat except for some minor place eionfty at the former his trip so far has not been very profitable. Huntley, half-brother to Lancer, •pened his winning account when he won the Paroa Hack Handicap at Omoto on Saturday. He is an improving galloper and, although not likely to reach high honours, will develop into a useful performer. He was ridden a good race by C. Hughes, the stable apprentice, who also recorded his initial victory. Booster looked in good racing condition when paraded for the Borough Handicap at the Greymouth Meeting on Saturday, and the public made him a little better than an even money favourite. He duly won. hut had to do his b«t fo beat Tane. It to an attractive effort on his part a long absence, giving evidence that h" 1 is yet a power to be reckoned with. ("ourflike was again unfortunate at Greymouth ok Saturday, losing nr.y winning chance at the rise of the barrier. tOie had a lot of ground to make up. and did well to finish on info second place after being in what appeared to be a hopeless position. Nasstori's rider. J. W. Jennings, was rery alert at the start of the Stewards' Handicap at Omoto on Saturday, and anticipated the rise of the barrier so successfully that his mount soon had a break on the rest of the lield. She won very easily, and ir looked as if Courtlike would have been put to a severe test even if she had go: away on favourable terms.

' Quarterdeck was a pronounced failure | on the Greymouth racecourse on .Satur- ; day. She failed to handle either the ! turns or the going, and always taiied ! -he field. She wouid be in -want of the i racp, but on her performance her rww ' o-vner will f.nd it difficult to -via wit" - her on the Coast. Some hor=e« make rapid improvem°r.t with racing, baiithereen.? had not bee:: Sin work kng prior to 'the \Vestiand f-tiag, at which he unsuccessfully : contested a seven furlong race, showing no promise whatever. Two -'lays later won the principal event over a mile : it Greymouth. practical" from end to end. I Arrowmir was considered the bet «i the day in the concluding event at ! Greymouth or, Saturday, but he let his ■ supporters down badly. He did not get the be.»t of treatment at the dispatch. ! V-ur was soon well placed and had every : chanc-e with three furlongs to go. He stopped, however, turning for home, and ; made no showing whatever uver" the j concluding stages. Tariff registered a promising performance Ivhen he led the field through- : < out in the Trial Handicap at the Grey- i i mouth meeting on Saturday. Ife was ! bought as a yearling by F. 1). Jones for j Mr H. A. Knight, who raced him at j nime of the smaller meetings in Sydney. ' Tariff went wrong on returning to New Zealand, and after bf-ing turned out for a year, was disposed of to R. Adamson. He is an attractive galloper, and is likely to show marked improvement with racing. i Although most of tJ><» IJiccartoa j trainers are away at present, assisting at meetings in various parts of the Dominion, there are a few at home, and they are busy getting horses ready for the Wellington Racing Club's meeting, to be held next month. Among the horses without holiday engagements, who are possibles for a trip to Trentham, are Pride, Goblin Market. Swiftray, Disorder. Straightcourse, Winsome Hind, Waterline. Marsham, Gay Crest, Coroner, Red Heckle, Te Awhina, and Starshooter. Master Clarence and Boniose. who are to race at Waikouaiti on Wednesday, went south last night. The}' were galloped on Saturday, Master Clarence going very pleasingly. TROTTING NOTES. Young blake supplies a good example of horses for courses and though he is not regarded as an out and out thampion at Addington, he finds the right-handed way of going at Auckland to his liking. Young Blake has made a number of trips to Auckland, and he has not yet failed to pay expenses. His record on the Alexandra Park course since the beginning of the 1027-28 season makes interesting reading. His first visit since then was to the Auckland Spring Meeting, where he won the Mountain Trot Handicap, while at the Summer Meeting: he was third in the Dominion Handicap and first in the Association Trot Handicap. At the Otahuhu Summer Meeting Young Blake won the Alexandra Handicap and at the Auckland Winter Meeting he was second in the Stewards' Handicap, and third in the Members' Trot Handicap. La.st season he wnt to Auckland for the Spring Meeting, and though he did not win a rare, he ran third in both the Mountain Trot and Hillsboro Trot Handicap. At the Summer Meeting he won the Epsom Trot Handicap, and at the Winter Meeting in .Tune last he won the Stewards' Trot Handicap, and finished third in the C. F. Mark Memorial. It is a great record so far as the Auckland course is concerned. A special horse train will leave Christchurch for Greymouth on Friday next at 6.10 a.m., and it is expected to reach its destination at 4.5 p.m. It will take horses from Christchurch, Swkburn, Templeton, and Rolleston, and those in charge of horses are requested to assist the .railway officials by loading their horses punctually. It is explained that if there is any delay in loading there is a big possibility that tha train will be held up at the tunnel mouth and will not reach Greymouth until considerably after the schedule time.

The Rangiora horseman, F. Price, is seldom without a mount in mile saddle races at Adctington, but as his father, N. C. Price, has no horse engaged in the saddle race at Canterbury Park, lie will have to view the contest from the firandstand. There are few, if any, better horsemen in the Dominion than Price-, and he has scored more successes than anyone else in saddle races during the past twelve months.

Wraekler has started seven times so far this season for four wins and a third. The Wrack—Trix Pointer gelding, now only four years old, has been a great stake winner, for in addition to this year's good record, he started seventeen times last year for five wins, five seconds, and a third. Up to date he has won £3BBO and is Btill on a mark from which further successes may be anticipated. In the President's Handicap on the third day of the Auckland Meeting he has been handicapped to do 4.27. and if started he is likelv to have a big following on the totalisator.

In dead-heating with. Kohara in the Champion Handicap at Auckland on Saturday. Padlock gave further proof of his brilliancy over a mile and a quarter, and liis liking for a track that has the sting ont of it. After his performance in the Free for All at Addington._ when he easily disposed of Peter Bingen over a mile and a quarter, it is surprising to learn that he was not better supported on the totalizator. The handicapper. Mr George Paul, jun., evidently regards Padlock as a great sprinter, for lie has set him to give starts in the Onslow Handicap up t-o 72 yards in a 2.13 class. " N.Z. REFEREE/' NEW YEAR PROSPECTS. Every sportsman will want the current issue of the "New Zealand Referee - ' for two reasons in particular. The first is that it contains reviews of practically every day's racing (and trotting") up to and including Saturday last. So far as the racing at Ellerslie and Awapuni is concerned, additional interest is lent the reviews by the presence of pictures dealing with the running on Boxing Day. These aggregate the best part of three pages of illustrations specially done for the "Referee." The second reason why the journal should be widely sought is that it piovides its readers with the latest notes on form for the following Meetings to be held on New Year's Day :—Stratford. Marton. Southland. Wairarapa, Hawke's Bay. and the two southern meetings. Last week's issue wn= evidence of the value of these form notes to the racing public generally. On the light harness side there iample to hold the attention of tiie followers of that sport. Full details of the running at Alexandra Park on Friday and Saturday A.-hlmrton. Antrim Boy and Dubious led Red Heather over the first two fences. Then Antrim Boy and Red Heather drew away and led Dubious and Heather Lad alonf the back. Rounding the far turn the latter moved up to the leaders and then led Antrim Boy and Red Heather up the hill and into the straight. Heather Lad, whose name was omitted from the race card, was four lengths to the good at the last hurdle, and favoured by the soft going, ran home an easy winner by six lengths from Antrim Boy, who beat Red Heather by five lengths Beauty Light was half a length away fourth. Nincompoop fe!l at the last fence, and Jimmy Tripger was pulled up. An enquiry was held into the improved running o" Antrim Boy as compared with the first day, and the explanation tendered was accepted.

SMITHEREENS WINS CMEF EVENT.

('SPECIAL TO THE PRESS.' GKEYMOUTH, December 28. Alter rain yesterday the weather broke fine for the first day of the GreymoUih Racing Club's Summer Meeting, held at Omoto to-day, and there was a large gathering of the public. Machine Gun was a slijhtlv better favourite than Nelson Tasker for the Summer Handicap, with Torpedo Huon a irood third choice. tarmel. Genuine, Torpedo Huon, The Bhre\v, and Nelson Tasker were prominent in a bunched field over the first mile. Genuine headed Carme! four furlongs from home, when Machine Gun, Torpedo Huon, The Shrew, and Nelson Tasker were handilv placed, -a it'n Concliff moving up. Machine Gun dashed to ihiead about three furlongs from home and was never afterwards headed, winning by a length from Concliri", who finished well to beat Torpedo Huon by two lengths. Peterw'ah, who broke near the post when looking likely to fill second place, was fourth, followed by Genuine and Nelson Tasker. Machine Gun ran right tip to his cup form and won niceiy. Concliff covered a lot of ground, otherwise he would have given more trouble. Nelson Tasker faded out nt the finish, but Torpedo Huon paced a sound race, always beinjr in the picture. Only five started in the Epsom liundio.ni. and the Western Voyage-Young Blake bracket wc.s backed down to odds on, being over twice as w<jil backed as the second choice, Peter McKinney. The field went away well. and when they were fairly on the jonruey Peter McKinney, who was inclined to mix it. was well clear of Flose Bingeu and Kempton. Peter McKinney, Rose Bingen. Kempton, and Young Blake were in fairly close order two furlongs from home, Peter McKinney and Rose Bingen being together at the" turn. Half-way down the straight Peter McKinney broke, and Young Blake came fast on the outside to beat Rose Bingen by a short head. Peter McKinney was two lengths away third. with Western Voyage fourth. Kempton was well back. It was a great exhibition of trotting, and this compensated for the small field. Young Blake's finishing effort was characterised by considerable dash.

There was the largest pool of the day on the Ranfnrly Handicap, and Wrackler was an odds-on favourite, carrying slightly over a third of the investments and being over twice as well backed as the second choice. Free Advice. Stanmoor and Free Advice broke at the start, while Wilms Dillon tangled after going away fast. All Bell, Tony Victor. Gold Dial, and Carmel were prominent early. With a lap covered, Imprint ran through on the fence and Wrackler became prominent on the outside. The leaders bunched near the home turn, where Wrackler rushed to the front from All Bell. Imprint, Gold Dial, Carmel, and Free Advice, who had run up fast on the outside. Wrackler drew away in the run to the post and won convincingly by a length from All Bell, with Carmel two and a half lengths away third. Stanmoor, finishing fast, was fourth, followed by Imprint, Free Advice, and Acre. Wrackler registered a stylish performance, as he was forced to cover considerable ground and was always on the outside until he reached the front. Stanmoor and Free Advice went fine race* -after losing ground at the start, and would have' been in the picture only for this. Imprint had every chance as he secured a fine run on the rails. Carmel made a solid showing, while All Bell, who must be one of the oldest horses racing, demonstrated that he is still capable over short courses.

NOTES ON THE RACING.

[THE PRESS Special Serrtca.] PALMERSTON N„ December 23. Democratic, the favourite for the Hurdles, was moving back as the barrier went up and lost several lengths. He was up with the leaders at the last fence, where he hit, and this combination of circumstances settled his chance. Red Bank made the running from Aurora Borealis, Diana s Lad, and Jen. Fine Acre moved up down the back and joined Aurora Borealis. This pair ran past the leaders on the turn, where Democratic also moved up. Aurora Borealis, Fine Aore. Democratic, and Jen jumped the last fence practically together. Once over, Aurora Borealis and Fine Acre drew away, the former winning by a head. Jen was four lengths back third, and at intervals came Diana's Lad, Democratic and Novar. The winner improved considerably at the Meeting. Jen was badly handled. The Apprentices' Race went to a B°<>d priced sixth favourite, in Air lorce, with the favourite. Phastar, in third place Royal Queen, Footpad, and Arrowzone showed out first from Pari. Chopin, and Air Force. Royal Queen still had charge across the top from Chopin and Air Force. Air *«»»»*£• front entering the straight, and although Plane came along with a strong challenge A r Force won by a neck, while Plane beat Phastar by half a length. Chopin was fourth, followed by Voluna and Arrowzone. The winner scored nicely. Chop.n would not do his best without whip and spur. Phastar ran a creditable race. The two and three-year-old race was won nicely by the Limond—Conflict youngster, Sir Limond. but in • very rough riding race the fa X ourite, Arajean, got a bad spin. „„,i „« tha turn was nearly down. Ban Dress showed out first with Lord Thomond and they led to the half from Tripping, Bay tee and Te Wanga. Sir Limond swept up in the run home and won by a neck from Tripping who beat Ball Dress by half a length. S ' Royal King was fourth, followed by Catherine of Aragon. Araiean. and Lord Thomond. Ball Dress had every chance but the track conditions beat her. lne winner stood out amongst a lot of »»*«*»; though Arajean. with a good run, would have been dangerous. Right Bower fell at the "a fine'race was witnessed in the Liverpool Handicap, victory finally resting with At hoispear who. handily placed throughout, stuck on too well for the favourite, Otairi Ten, Blimp. Otairi, Full Mark, and Atholspear was the early order. Dolomite getting away poorly Down the back Teri still had charge from Otairi, Blimp, Full Mark, and Atholspear, Singleton being in the rear with Paitonu. Singleton moved up on .the turn and the order into line was Ten Otain Full Mark, from Atholspear and Singleton. A struggle home saw Atholspear beat Otairi by a head, wtih Full Mark a head away, another head in front of Bingleton. There was a cap to Blimp and Teri. and Paitonu and Dolomite whipped in. The unlucky runner was Singleton. Better placed earlier he would have won. ... The hack sprint saw a certainty beaten in Rational 11 who got a bad getaway in a straggling start, and just failed to beat both the favourites. Hurly Burly and Blue Paper. When settled down the order was Mangaharei, First Ruler. and General Abbey. Blue Paper hit the front at the half-mile and ran round the turn from Hurly Burly. Mangaharei Ben Hur, Good Acre, rnd King Acre. Hurly Burlv joined Blue Paper entering the straight, and they drew away, Hurly Burly gradually assuming mastery Then Rational II swept up with a brilliant run and got there in time to divide Hurly Burly and Blue Paper, heads separating them. Ben Hur was fourth, with Good Acre, Mangaharei and King Acre next. Hurly Burly scored nicely, but Rational 11. was a good thing astray. The second class handicap saw support for Keddar. Never further back than third, he just got home in another very close finish. Msntv and Cerf did not get off on terms. Keddar, Roi de Val. and Rameses led out of the' straight, and in the back stretch Rameses went out from Roi de Val and Keddar. then Borsalene and Rory Mor. Cerf made s' fsst run past the half and on the turn. ieadins into the straight with Keddar from Rory Mor. Tn a great struggle to the iudse Keddar prevailed from Ro r y Mor bv half a head, with Cerf half a length awsv. and Manly right up. Eorsaltne was next, then Rameses and Roi de Val. Better placed earlier Cerf would have been hard to beat. The favourite in the hack «ever.. C!a-en-don. duly won. but had Oscar been well ridden he would hirve won.
