Sudden Storm Shortly after midday y«*terda>- tin- v becamo very sultry, with occanional aquall# of wind from the north west. At Lyttelton the air becatnu oppreaaively still, and ahortly afterwords those in 'vantage pointa about thn harbour witnessed the almost awe-in-npirinir of a southerly rale advancing in what appeared to he a solid wall of rain, accompanied bv a -tierce wind. The storm ntnvod steadily from the direction of Oharteris Bay and Teddmeton, mid the roar of the wind could tie heard in the port while tho (rale was still a mile awav. The wind could be seen whipping: up the surface of tho sea fn sheets of spray, and at on# time three small waterspouts could be observed, one off tho Keef and two nearer Quail Island Then tho ca'e struck the port, with heavy, blinding ruin and a strong wlnr* which threatened to bend everything before It. The storm was of short duration, and wm fob lowed by a lipht rain for an hour. The sky then cleared and the sun came out. the remainder of the afternoon and erertnc being very hot. Powar Failure, The supply of electric pouar to Ijytt«l ton wn interrupted at frequent intervals last evening for a period extending over an hour. In all, the power was off fourteen times. Work on the wharves was inter rupted owing to the frequent atoppare of the electric cranes and capstans. Later, other feeder lines were placed in commission, and the supply continued as usual The trouble wa» caused through a shortage of the high tension lines at Heathcote.
