'lhe £oinE may ntfect many of the other candidates, the best of whom appear to be Zeuxis and Danthoma. Garvarv. Roval Heritage, and Turn*>vor niav bo the best supported in the Trial Handicap. In the Stewards' Handicap, .C'onrrlik'\ An ii Arrow, and \asstori appear to have good prospects. In a good cla-s field for the principal event, the Kettle Memorial Handicap, Sea Raid, Wayward, "and Royal Game will probably dispute favouritism. Page Boy, Topere and Landmark comprise a likely trio to contest the honours in the Paroa Hack Handicap. Booster, Arch Arrow, and Tane mav lie in most demand for the Borough Handicap. Gourmet, Gold Mint, and Shot Silk will be in public favour for the first High-Weight Handicap. Arrowmir, Waihemo, and Huntley should be well favoured in the Brunner Handicap. TROTTING NOTES. The acceptances received for the Canterbury Park Trotting Club's Summer Meeting give promise of first-class racing on Wednesday, and vrith a field of enly twelve horses in the principal #vent of the day there should be a great contest. Class is -well represented in the New Zealand Cup horses, Dundas Boy, Cardinal Logan, Quality, Kingcraft, Waitaki Girl, and Terence Dillon, while farther out in the handicap are improving pacers in Travis Axworthy and Harvest Child. Possibly Kingcraft will be the early favourite, but it would be unwise to ignore the chances of Dundas Boy, a great stayer, and probably now approaching his best. Kid Logan, whose form of late has been well above the average, claims two engagements on the opening day of the Canterbury Park Summer Meeting, and in whichever race she is started she is assured of solid support. In the Templeton Handicap of a mile and a half she is set to do 3.30, and, as she won in 3.22 at New Brighton, she seems to have a good deal the better of matters. Later in the day she is engaged in the Lyttelton Handicap, of two miles, and she is asked to do 4.40. In the Midsummer Handicap at Ashburton she went two miles very easily in 4.37, so it seems that on this occasion she is also very nicely treated. If Kid Logan were to win the Templeton Handicap there might be no reason why she should not also start in the Lyttelton Handicap, although her trainer, N. C. Price, is not cne to overrace his horses. Kid Logan is engaged at the Westland T.C. Annual Meeting on January 3rd and in the President's Handicap, of two miles, 4.36 class, at the Timaru Meeting on January 11th. The death is reported from Auckland •f the well-known studruaster, Mr B. P. Edwards, at one time one of the leading trainers and drivers in Canterbury. At •ne time he was associated with Monte Carlo, the champion trotter of his day and a winner of the New Zealand Cup. For a number of years he had been resident in the Auckland district, and his Dilworth Stud Farm is known far and wide. lie was a brother of the late M. B. Edwards and an uncle of the wellknown trainer and driver of the same name. DUNEDIN J.C. PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY. [TOT PRBSS Special Serrtct.] DUNEDIN, December 27. Heavy rain fell throughout this ■jorninji, and though lighter this afterBoon the prospect-s for to-morrow's racing are not opod, and the course is Sure to bo heavy. Heather Lad {ft-10i was omitted from the telegraphed list of acceptances and will be No. 7 on the race card in tomorrow's hurdle ra?e. If he jumps as well a« lie did on the second day at Gore, Nincompoop is likely to trouble Beauty Light and Dubious in the Milium Hurdle*. The prospects of the ftthers are poor. Quantum, with an apprentice'.-, allowance, promise :o be hard in t he Grandstand Handicap, and he handles tea-y going well. Caterpillar an 1 El

Academy, trbo is particularlv well handicapped. and Solmuri read the best of the others. Black Duke vill be hotter tuitcd otct a mile in the St. Andrew's Handicap than he was over six furlongs yesterday, but Taboo wi!i find the going very much in his favour to-morrow. Tim", 1.16. NOTES ON THE RACING. [THE PBESS Special Service.] PALMERSTON* >"., December 27. Riccarton stables triumphed at Awapuni to-dav, when Hoylake won the principal race. while" Full Feather and Silver Coot, both trained on the southern track, fought out a great finish in the open sprint. The weather was very rough and stormy, a heavy nor-'west gale raging all day. Fortunately rain did not fall till about ten minutes before the last race, and the track Tras much drier for seven races than it was yesterday. Some wonderful racing was witnessed, the handicapper (Mr J. E. Henrys) excelling himself. Backers had a disastrous day, the best the favourites could do being to run one second and one dead-heat for second. Kelvin Handicap. The hack distance event was again won by Balloon in good style, after being freely used, the favourite. Make Up, being relegated to fourth place. Kilorell, Vinella, Make Up, and Shortly led out of the straight, Goldlike being flow away. There was not much change in the leading order till five furlongs from home, when Skyrider and Balloon moved up, Shortly, Skyrider, and Balloon running abreast round the home turn from Make Up, Vinella. and Goldlike. Balloon was out clear entering the straight with. Shortly, Skyrider, Make Up, Goldlike, and Mothplane crowding after him. Balloon hung on and beat Goldlike by a head, with Mothplane a length away. Make Up was fourth, followed by Plane. Shortly, Kiriana. and Kilorell. No excuse* can be made for the defeat of Make Up. Mothplane again came from well back. High-Weight Handicap. WarTonf created a great surprise in the High-Weight Handicap by downing the fav. ourite. Democratic, but the prey mare Mirabilary was a good thing beaten by indifferent horsemanship. Auroro Borealis aud Warzone l<~d through the straight from Night Dew, Fiery Comet, and Pole Star. Down the back Night Dew led from Warzone, Pole Star, and Fine -Vn, with Mirabilary fighting for his head in last place. Mirabilary made a fast ran from the five fur'one p n s', and on the turn the order was Nightde.v, Mirabilary. Warzone and Democratic. Once in line Warzone and Democratic challenged Mirabilary. War-one beating Democratic by half a i length, wiih Mirabilary a head away. Fine | Acre was fourth, with Fiery Comet. Nigbtdew, | and Auroro Borealis next. Tn a great ttruggle up " the straight High Society just squeezed home bv inches- from Head Sesang and Patearoa, whom the judge was unable to separate. Phastar was fourth, followed by Glenrossie, Singer, and Valma. High Society has been a disappointing horse, but he raced ud to his best form to-day. Roundelay was well tip on the turn, but finished well back. Phastar ran a creditable race. Himitangi Handicap. The second-class handicap maintained the ill-fortune of the favourites, Teri being soundly beaten. High Falutin' lost ground at the start. Rameses, Kory Mor, Cerf, and Borsalena led out of the straight. When settled down Rameses led from Rory Mor and Cerf, with High Falutin* snd Don Joso making runs up the back. On the turn and into the straight the order was Rory JUor, High Falutin', Don Jose, Rameses, Manly, and Cerf. all bunching. A fine race home saw Rory Mor get jp on the fence and win by a neck from High Falutin'. with Manly a head away. Cerf was fourth, followed bv Borsalene, Teri, and Don Jose. High Falutin' looked unlucky. Awapuni Handicap. The day finished in heavy rain, and a complete record of eight disasters for the favourites, Keddar being unplaced in the open sprint, while Gold Dawn, almost as well backed, could only run third. Silver Coot, Dobbin. Gold Dawn, and Royal Duke began backed, could run only third. Silver Coot, drew out from Dobbin, Gold Dawn, and Royal Duke. At the half Full Feather moved up from a handy position and the order of the turn was Silver Coot, Gold Dawn, Dobbin, Royal Duke, and Full Feather. Silver Coot turned for home first, and was almost immediately .joined by Full Feather. The latter drew out at the last furlong, but Silver Coot came again, and Full Feather in a battling finish won by a long head. Gold Dawn was a length and a half back third, with Juggle fourth. Then came Royal Duke, Keddar, and Dobbin. The heavy ram was an advantage to the winner. Silver Coot showed great speed, and this Riccarton pair were too good for the opposition. Most of the winners were well backed, and the only real surprise was the win of 1 lorent. Go.d Jacket won the Auckland Cup for the second rear in succession, and Raima scored in the Rowe Trotting Cup. The Auckland colt Great Parrish accounted for the Great Northern Trotting Derby, just getting home from Ngin;nnginso and Tvoyal Silk, and being lucky to be'at Nstingongingo, who lost a good deal of ground at" tap start, where Purser completely settled his chance by breaking up very badly. All started in the Introductory Handicap, and Akenehi was slishtly better fancied than Writer and Tamahine, Linnett the Great being fifth choice at a nice price. Marble Star went out fa*t, and with half a milecovered was out twelve lengths from Linntit the Great, who was followed by Wiid Nut, Tamahine. Kolmar. and Akenehi. With a mile covered Akenehi broke badly and Marble S'ar was coming back a little Four lnrlonss from home Linnett the Great headed Marble Star, who put in a short skip, and Tamahine also moved up. Linnett the Great led into the straight two length? clear of Tamahi™ and Marble Star, and »be trotted on solidly to run out a eotnfortab'e winner by a lencth and a half from Tamahine. who beat Wi'd Nut by a similar marrin. Lady Fan was right up fourth, wi'lt Marble S'ar ami Kolmar next. Linnett the Groat »nr well. wh ; !» Tamahine and Wild Nut b-th ;roT' ? -l solid races. Lady Fan made a g"od run over *r.e last half mile, where Marble Star s'opped badly. Akenehi was trottin? well when she broke 3t the mile post, and Writer was aiso going last when he broke a- the three furlong; pos f , where he wa? some ler-'hs behind the leaders. Af'er his break Writer was eased and eventually finished last. The December Handicap was 3 good betting race, with Er;3waa, Queen Elizabeth, a cd Sir Author the best backed. Maid of the Mountains, Trustworthy, and Rccfe- Audubon were slow to settle down, Enawah goinr ou' smar+iy to lead from Nella Dillon, who took chare? after going two furlongs. Once in line for home Gold Jacket challenged and came on to win '.' a len-th and • half from Peter Bint-eii. Machine Gun and Padlock were three-quarters of a length away, s dead-heat for third, and Kohara fifth. Next came Linkmau and Dilworth. Gold Jacket was caught at hi- best, and finished brilliantly. Peter Bingen, who was suited by the slow paco earlv, paced a remarkably good race, while Machine Gun and Padlock also paced solid races. Dilworth had every chance and failed to stay. Coucliff and Prince Fointer never got up close enough iu the middle stages to have a chance. The Great. Northern Trot tine Derby was productive of n wonderful finish between Great Parrish, Ngingongingo, and Royal Silk, who were separated by half beads. Great Parrish was a pronounced favourite, with Ngingongingo and Purser also solidly* backed. Grand Canyon and Ngingongingo broke up at the start, while Koyal Silk was also a trifle slow, and Purser settled his chance completely. First Flight and Great Parrish were smartest to begin, and when they had cme four furloners First Flight, Great Parfish, Ken-pie's Guy, Lydia, Koyal Silk, Grand Gauyon, Ngingongingo, and Purser were racing "in file at intervals of over a length. With a' lap covered. Royal Silk moved up info third position, otherwise thero was little change until four furlongs from home, when Ngingongingo began to make a forward move. First Flight and Great Parrish were almost abreast entering the straight, with Royal Silk, and Ngingongingo about two lengths away. Once they straightened up First Flight was beaten, and Royal Silk challenged on the rails, aud Ngingongingo came on the outside. In a wonderful finish Great Parrish just got home from Nghigougingo, with Royal Silk inches away. First Flight was four lengths back fourth, with the others easing up and well away. Ngingongingo was a certainty beateu, for he lost a lot of ground and gave Great Parrish several lengths start over the last half-mile. Good wagering on the Grandstand Handicap saw Mountain Dell, Cornelian, and Keremai at the head of the quotations. Cornelian and Concertina attended to the pacemaking, but with five furlongs to go Mountain Dell took charge from Brutus, Cornelian, Evelyn Locanda, and Reremai. Tney raced into the straight in this order, and then Brutus took charge, to be tackled immediately by Evelyn Locauda, Reremai, and S'tanmoor. Brutus broke near the post, and in a good finish, Evelyn Locanda won by a long neck from Keremai, with Stinmoor three-quarters of a length away third Brutus was fourth, followed by Mountain Dell and Hal Chimes. Brutus may have won, but for breaking. Hal Chimes went a good race after being slow away, but Cornelian faded out in the last furlong, after having every chance. Mountain Dell also stopped quickly in the straight. YV'aikaha, Raima, and the. Western Voy-age-Young Blake Eizear bracket were best lacked for the Rowe Trotting Cup. The fifld moved away well, and when they settled down Peter McKiuney was six lenglus clear of Raima and Kcse Bingen. Wi„n a lap t.i go Peter McK'nroy broke, and Raima took charge from Rose Bingen, Peter McKitmey, W'aikaha, and Youjg Blake. So they raced 'o the straight, wt.ere Raima stayed on tc Kb: by a head froic Rose Bingen who defeated Young Ulake by a length Peter McK/iiriey was ciosa up fourth, inllowed by Wa> ima, Ngatira, and Ebzear. Raima trotted laultlessly, bus was all out to beat Rosa Bingen, who is back to her best form. Young Blake trotted a fine race, but was not the luckiest in the running, being outside a sulky all the way, and sometimes two. Eizear made a brilliant run over the last hail'-mile, but could not quite reach tna leaders. Waikivia had every chanca, and did not finish with nts usual dash An outsider in Horent effected a ij sur prise in the St. Heiier's Handicap, with anoutsider in Bessio Logan, in second place. Wilma Dillon, Wrackler, and the Vendome-The Shrew bracket were the best backet}. Florent and Warplane went aw»j smartly and made play from Wilms Dillon, who ran through quickly, First Carbine, and Geld Dial. Warplane broke near the home Corn, and Florent led into the straight just clear of Wilma Dillon, Bessis Logan, and Carmel, with Torpedo Huon, and Wrackler showing up on the outside. Florent stayed on in the run home, and won by a long head from Bessie Logan, with Torpedo Huon a neek sway third. Wrackler, wide out, was right up fourth, followed by Wilma Dillon, Imprint, Nelson Tasker, and Carmel. Torpedo Huon, Wrackler, and Imprint were unlucky in tna running, Wrackler having to go out very wide at the straight entrance. Wilma Dillon faded out at the finish after going well to the turn, and Carmel also tired in the run home. Great Peter was a solid favourite for the Akarana Handicap, being over twice as well backed as the second choice, Richore, who had a slight call over Warspite. Respect refused to leave the mark, and Delavan Bill broke, while Warspite tangled early after going off smartly. Nella Dillon attended to the pacemaking, with Richore and Ursuline handy. Richore was momentarily in charge three furlongs from home, and then Nella Dillon took charge again, to just lead into the straight from Richore, Great Peter, and Ursuline. As soon as heads Mere turned for home, Great Peter settled the leaders and came on to win easily by a length and a quarter from Nella Dillon, who beat Richore by a neck. Flaerenga Pai was a fair fourth, succeeded by Hal Chimes and Childe Audubon. Great Peter has been a disappointment for some time when racing over long distances, but he demonstrated here that he has lost none of his brillianej Nella Dillon and Richore went solid races, and Richore would have been second if he had not been asked for an effort so early.
