ACCLIMATISATION.

NORTH CANTERBURY SOCIETY. The Council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society met last night, Mr (t. T. Robertson presiding over a good attendance. Dr. C. J. Newell, while thanking the Council for having elected him a membfr, regretted that he could not accept the position. It was decided to ask Mr L. R. Brunton to fill the vacancy on the Council. The Land Purchase Committee reported that 26 properties had bet>n placed undar offer in the following districts.—Marshland, Styx. Hussley, Middle Lincoln, Prebbleton, Tai Tapu, Motnkarara, Bpringston, and Greenpark. The committee would bring down a definite report with recommendations at next meeting. OpoMtiai Committee. The Department of Internal Affair* wrote that it was intended to consider alterations to the opossum regulations, and asking the Council to forward any suggested alterations Mr 8. Barnett said that the time had arrived when they should have an opossum committee as the society was receiving considerable revenue from opossums which was being devoted to research work. Mr Lawrence said that if Profcesor Kirk's report was favourable, there was no doubt that there were areas in the society's district on whicl* opossums could be liberated, the revenue from which would benefit the society's research work. • It was decided to set up an opossum committee, and the following were elected: Me«sra J. Studholme, Douglas Deans, and D. Hobbs. The Department'# letter was referred to the committee. Bights of Shooters. The Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr W. Stewart) wrote that the Department was issuing licenses over McQueen's lagoon, and he asked if the society desired any special clauses inserted protecting the rights of shooters. He understood that shooters did not use this area. In the course of discussion it was emphasised that the society should cot <lo anything to restrict the area which shooters could use. It was decided to ask the Commissioner of Crown Lands to insert special clauses protecting the rights of shooters.
