UNEMPLOYMENT.
TWO HUNDRED MEN TO GET WORK. The Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) telegraphed yesterday morning to Sir Joseph Ward asking if the Government would subsidise pound for pound up to £IOOO any money voted by the Council for the relief of the unemployed. Sir Joseph replied: "Your telegram re subsidy for unemployment received and will have early consideration." The matter was considered by the Finance Committee at its meeting yesterday afternoon. Cr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P., the chairman of the committee, made the following statement afterwards:— "We have decided to provide work for 200 men for one week. The men are to be married men with dependents, and local men. They are to be selected by Mr R. T. Bailey, the officer in charge of the Labour Department. Mr Galbraith, the City Engineer, will start some of the men to-morrow (Thursday). They are to be employed in two batches, and as many as possible will be given a few days' work before Christmas. It has been a very difficult matter to arrange, and the Council has done its utmost in the circumstances and all that the present state of its finances will permit." Mr Sullivan added that no additional communication had been received from Sir Joseph Ward.
