NORTH CANTERBURY.

| RANGIORA. ! The weekly dance of tbe Celtic Tennis Club proved very successful. The lucky spot waltz was won by Miss I. Gibbs and partner, and the Monte Carlo by Mr J. Power and partner. Bro. G. Gibling, W.M.. presided at a meeting of the Excelsior Lodge of Past Grands, M.U., 1.0.0. F., held on Monday night. The Purple Degree was conferred on P.G. Bro. J. H. Lucas, of the I Loyal Ohoka Lodge. It was decided to adhere to quarterly meetings for the lodge. The committee of the Eangiora branch of the Plunket Society met yesterday, when representatives from Oxford, Cust, j and Sefton were present. It was decided to vote £lO to the Karitane Home, and also to urge the Borough Council to have the alterations to the Plunket room completed as soon as possible. Mrs J. B. Deal's resignation from the committee was accepted with regret, and it was agreed to. send her a letter expressing appreciation of her services. An interesting paper on '"Obstetrics,'-' written by Dr. Derrick, was read by the secretary, Mrs W. Smith. The general committee of the Bowling, Tenuis, and Croquet Club met on Monday, Mr R. H. Bailey presiding. Four new members were added to the tennis section. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £226 0s Id. Included in the receipts was a sum of £l4, raised by the. ladies of the croquet section by their "bring and buy" afternoon, making a total of £42 paid in to the general fund by the section as a result of special efforts. It was resolved to forward a letter to the members of the section thanking them for their 'substantial assistance. Satisfactory reports were received from all sections of- the olub. In response to a petition from a number of ratepayers in the Eangiora County whose properties are in the area of the proposed sewage treatment works, Mr W. Stalker, chairman of the Council, arranged a conference yesterday between the petitioners, the Eangiora'Borough Council, and the Health Department, when the matter of the discharge of the affluent, was discussed. The petitioners stated that all depended on water from the stream in which it was proposed to drain the affluent for watering their stock, especially milking cows, and they viewed with considerable alarm the possibility of pollution the water. They asked that the Council do everything 'possible to conserve their interests. Mr Steven, Borough Engineer, explained the nature of the treatment and assured them that there was no danger whatever of pollution, and in this he was supported by Dr. Fletcher Telford, District Health Officer, who was present. The representatives of the Borough decided that an agreement would be drawn up as between the Borough and the County ratepayers assuring them that there would be no pollution of the stream from, the affluent of the borough sewage, the agreement to be submitted to Dr. Telford for his approval. Besides representatives from the ratepayers of the county a representative was present from the Church Property Trustees Christchurch. ' KAIAPOI. After the annual inspection of the Kaiapoi Fire Brigade on Monday evening, Superintendent Hugo and members of the Kaiapoi Fire Board were the guests of the Brigade at supper, held m the social room. Superintendent Hugo addressed the Brigade on fire fighting and brigade drill, his remarks on the latest improvements in fire-fighting being listened to with interest. CHEVIOT. A -meeting of tbe committee of the Cheviot Amateur Sports Club was held on Monday, Mr T. West presiding. Tho secretary reported that excellent entries had been received for the annual sports on Saturday next. Mr F. S. Wilson was. appointed assistant starter, in place of Mr R. Q. G. Westenra. who would be unable to attend. A sub-committee to control the field events was set up as follows: Mr W. Walls and the judges. Messrs E. Harrison, A. Goodman, and P. A. Barnes were appointed car-parking stewards. It was decided that the dancing and piping events be held in the oval. Working bees were arranged for this afternoon and to-morrow evening. Mr R. G. G. Westenra forwarded a donation towards the funds, and was accorded a vote of thanks. The following new members were elected: Messrs T. E. Elliott, W. Souter, B. Martin, Clarence Elliott, A. C. Fuller, J. F. Tonkin, E. Coaklev, L. F. Teague, I. Foster, F. L. Thomas, D. H. Milne, A. M. Hyde, J. Miller, A. A. Down, and R. Rollinson. A special service in connexion with the Sunday School anniversary was held in Knox Presbyterian Church on Sunday, when there was a good congregation. Special hymns were sung by the scholars and an appropriate address was given by the Rev. G. B. Jardine. SEFTON. The Presbyterian Girls' Auxiliary met at the Manse. The balance-sheet for the recent Japanese festival and concert was presented, showing receipts £lB, expenditure £4, leaving £l4 for the Missionary Fund. After the business, music, games, and competitions were held, the winners of the competition being Misses T. Peach, M. Vette, and S. Hanna. After supper, the president, Mrs Farrar. spoke of the good work done by Mrs K. Ritohie, of Ashlev in training the girls for the Japanese festival, and on behalf of the girls Miss Thelma Peach presented Mr Ritchie with a copjjer bowl. The Sefton cricket team played Woodend on the home ground "on Saturday, the result being a drawn game. Woodend scored 186 (W. Eder 47, T. Green 46 (retired}. Moody 37, and B. Huria 16). Sefton scored 50 for seven wickets, all of the batsmen falling to Moody. TAI TAPU. A children's service was conducted at the Presbyterian Church on Sunday afternoon by the Rev. G. A. N'aylor, of Lincoln. There was a large attendance of parents and and the pupils of the Sunday School, under the direction of Mrs Suckling, sang a number of hymns. Miss Edna Macartney was organist. At the conclusion, prizes won during the year were presented. Betty Macartney, on behalf of the children" presented Mrs Suckling with a beautiful bouquet of red roses, conveying to her the love of her pupils in the Sunday School. Mr A K. Wilson, also on their behalf, asked her to accept a handbag as a token of appreciation of her work as superintendent. The recipient briefly responded. LINCOLN. The school picnic was held at Corsair Bay. Although the day was dull and rather cold for bathing, some hardy spirits ventured in. Others had a launch trip round the harbour, and all returned home tired but happy. Constable Smither left yesterday" for Oxford, to which station he has "been transferred. Constable Orchard arrives to-day from Methven to take orar'the charos of-ti» local station.

CUST. There was a very iarge attendance at St. David's Presbyterian Church on Sunday, the occasion being the annua! Chrijtrcas service for the young people. Appropriate hymns were sung and Mr Simmundi gave an address on "They presented unto Him gilts."' At the ciose the prizes tor Sunday school and church attendance were presented. An encouraging fact is that only two children have made less than 95 per cent, of attendance during the past year. At a meeting of the Sports Club, final arrangements were made for the sports meeting, to be held in the Domain on Saturday. The canvassers reported that 'here had been a generous response to the appeal tor trophies. The ground committee reported that the track was in good order. A verv satisfactory number of entries had come in for the cycling and wood chopping events. SEDGEMERE. Mr C. L. Brown presided over a meeting cf the Ellesmere Aquatic Club, held in the Sedgetnere Hall, when arrangements were made for the regatta on New Year's Day. _ Advice was received from the Lllesmere County Council that permission had been granted to make a charge for admission to the reserve. Mr . o'Boyle's tender of £5 os was accepted for the sole right to conduct a fruit and drinks booth A suggestion that the club should conduct side-shows was referred to the secretary. Mr Quigley mentioned a suggestion that one or two races should be included for outboard motor-boats. He_ was a.sked to make enquiries, and if assured of a sufficient number of entries. to notify the secretary, who would have the events added to the programme. Messrs X. Brown and W. ,t. Patterson were enrolled as members. After the meeting, the secretary, Mr R. Bruce, was entertained socially. In proposing the health of the euest. Mr J. T Parkin said that Mr Bru::e had proved a capable secretary and organiser, and Dossessed the tact necessary to keep affairs running smoothly He had held office for about five years, and it said much for his enthusiasm that during the last two years he was prepared to iourney from Killinehy to attend meetings at Sedeemere. Mrs Bruce h?id also taken a. live interest in the club's affairs. Mr Parkin presented to the guest two Dipes in rases as tokens of regard. Mr F. Alexander, n former president, and Mr C. L. SOUTH MALVERN. A special meeting of the Glentunnel School Committee and others interested in the annual break-up was held on Monday evening, Mr C. Stuart presiding. A vote of sympathy with the secretary, Mr A. M. Wilson, in his serious illness was carried, the chairman being requested to convey the wishes of the raeetina for a speedy recovery to Mr Wilson. It was decided to give a tea for the children at six o'clock to-morrow evening. Games in the Domain will follow the tea, and at 8 o'clock "Father Christmas'] will arrive and present each child with a gift from the Christmas tree. No attendance prizes are to be given this year, the committee having decided to make a small present to each child in their place.
