THE WAIMAKARIRI.

♦ ; MEETING OF TRUST. J " ■ i A meeting of the Waiinakanri River Trust was held yesterday afternoon-and was attended by Messrs J. Wood (chairman), J. Leslie, A. Manhire, J. A. Flesher, F. W. Freeman, H. E. Evans, J. H. Blackweli, and the Hon. Mr Witty, M.L.C. The resident engineer (Mr H. W. Harris) reported for the month of November: Bridge Approach: The filling behind the bridge abutment null be completed in a few days. A number of concrete blocks have been lifted from the old ,' river bank; these have been carted for use on the protection work in the vicinity of the abutment. The willows and poplars planted along the new bank and bridge approach are showing very vigorous growth. It is intended with all future planting, as with this, to put in alternate rows of willows and poplars. By this means we will get the benefit of the different root systems and also guard as far as possible against total loss of planting bv disease. The disease which attacked so many willows in South Canterbury last year is stated to be completely killing out fairly large areas on the Waipara River. Highway Bridge: The contractor has put his new pile-driving crane into operation and should now get good progress with his driving. The girdera have been placed into position on three spans, concrete beams poured, and boxing well under wav for deck slabs. Cam River: The improvement work is proceeding apace. All trees in the bed are being pulled out with the aid of an engine. As a precautionary measure J.he> Rangiora County Council has closed the Camside road during the progress of the work. The engineer reported that at November 20th 119 men were in the Trust's employ.
