For the t-ventv-four hours ending 9 a.m. yesterday, eighteen points of rain fell, making a total of nearly half an inch since Monday. Obituary. A Canterbury pioneer of nearly eighty years' standing, Mr John Blackler, died at his residenre, 74 Arthur .street. Timaru, on Tuesday night at the age of Si years. Mr Blackler was born in Tiverton, Devonshire, Kngland, in 1*4,"), and came to New Zealand at the age of six years with bis parents, who first settled in Christchureh. He was educated at a private school in the City and after completing his education, assisted his father on engineering contracts. Many of the main roads in the City to-day were formed out of the swamp under the direction of Mr Blackler, who later took up farming in the vicinity of Doyleston. He married Miss Jcsßie Doyle, of Leeston. He came to Ashburton in 1398 as inspector and foreman to the Borough Council, a position which he held for twenty-five years, before retiring to Timaru about six years ago. Daring his term in Ashburton he laid the foundation of most of the borough streets, and was responsible for a great deal of the engineering work in the, town. In the early days he also acted in an advisory capacity to neighbouring county councils. He was a prominent member of the Ashburton Bowling Club. He was at one time an elder of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, and a member of the Masonic Lodge. Mr Blackler was also a member of the Timaru Bowling Club. He was a very active man up to within a few weeks' of his death, when he contracted an illness. He leaves a widow, three daughters —Mrs T. Crooks (Ashburton), Mrs T. Huston (Timaru), Mrs T. W. Taylor (Timaru) —and three sonsi—Messrs J. W. Blackler (Timaru), W. J. Blackler (Cromwell), and O. E. Blackler (Timaru). Axhburton Club. The position with regard to the Ashburton Club and Mutual School of Arts will not be effected by the decision of the Appeal Court in the licensing case, as this institution is governed by a different clause of the Licensing Act and other principles than those relating to hotels apply to charter clubs. Provisional licenses may still be granted for agricultural shows and race meetings, at the discretion of the Licensing Committee. RAKAIA. On Monday afternoon and evening 17 points of rain fell at Rakaia, and on Tuesday a further fall of 10 points was recorded. Although the fall was light, the rain has done a great deal of good to growing crops, and has also refreshed the pasture lands. Mr Ct. Morgan, who has boon visiting his parents nt Mt. .Soniers, has returned to Hannier. Special peace thanksgiving services are being held at the Presbyterian Church on Sunday. Owing to extensive alterations, being effected t« the school classrooms, the old school building, which served the district's needs for over 40 years, and which since the opening of the present school nearly 10 years ago has been used as a library, has been recommissioned for school purposes.
