OLD FIRE STATION.

MAYOR MAKES STATEMENT. "The Bill relating to the Chester street fire station site was before the Local Bills Committee yesterday, evidence being taken for and against the nroDOsal," said the Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer), at the meeting of the City Council last night. "I understand," he continued, "that there is a reasonable chance of the Bill being allowed to proceed, provided that it is amended in the direction of changing the purpose of the reserve from a fire brigade station site and providmg fliat the existing main building to be used as a Plunket ro?m or rest room, the Bill ; u its present form providing for the and being vested in the Christchurch City Council without any restrictions The drafting of the Bill m its present form was evidently done by the City solicitor under some misapprehension as the instruction given to him, which I have seen, made it clear that all the Council required was the changing of the purpose of the reserve from a fire station site to enable the main building to be used by the Plunket Society and for rest rooms." The Mayor added that neither he nor a„v member of the Council wantod the City to be given the ownership of the s it/ All that was wanted was for the usage of the site for one purpose.
