COUNTY COUNCILS.

AMURI. At the last meeting of the Amuri County Council those present were: Crs. M. Bethell (chairman), H. E. Davison, J. J. Duncan, K. Pettigew, It. Mercer, <?. 0. Rutherford, W. Hanmer Atkinson, - Le Clerc Latter, and R. L. Jameson. The chairman's action in granting J. O'Connell permission to keep the Council's gate near the Hurunui bridge on hinges and to keep it locked until such time as the reserve is fenced was approved. The Canterbury Progress League wrote asking that a letter be forwarded to the Prime Minister protesting against* the proposed raid on the Main Highways Fund. The chairman reported having written to the Minister for Lands regarding the proposals. The Forest Ranger wrote asking if the Council would guarantee to keep down broom and other growth on the proposed stock reserve at Jollie's Pass, providing the State Forest Service gave a sum of £2O towards the cost.. It was decided that the offer could not be accepted. In answer to a request from the New Zealand Counties' Association the clerk was instructed to forward information relating to compensation received on accident insurance. The secretary of the Oounties' Association wrote stating that at a meeting of representatives from the North and South Islands it was resolved that the creation of a second Highways Board for the South Island was neither necessary nor desirable. A letter was received froni- the Canterbury Progress League relating to the construction of a motor road between Canterbury" and the West Coast, via the Lewis Saddle. The N.Z. Workers' Union wrote asking for a reduction in dog registration fees for. dogs owned by musterers and drovers. It was decided to reply that the present fees were not considered excessive. An application from the Culverden Cemetery Board for assistance in surveying and plotting out the cemetery was referred to the Pahau Riding members. A. letter from Mr T. T. Shand with reference to the building of the Mandamus bridges was referred to the Pahau Riding members.

In Tiew of the excessive cost of plant for lighting the new office, it was decided that the matter be left in abeyance. Applications were received for the position of foreman, and it was resolred that R. Crampton be appointed. Th« Engineer traa authorised to call tenders for the sale of old timber.
