SIDE CHANNELS.

LOAN FOR BECKENHAM PROPOSED. THE PAPANUI SCHEME. The construction of side channel! in Papanui in respect of which a proposal to raise a loan was refused by the Wellington authorities was again referred to at last night's meeting of the City Council by Cr. E. H. Andrews. The matter arose out of a report on another similar scheme by the Water Supply and Works Committee, which was as follows: — As a result of complaints received from the Beckenham-Fisherton Burgesses' Association and the residents of the district generally, the City Engineer has prepared an estimate of the cost of channelling and asphalting part of Eastern and Western terraces between Eiverview and Tennyson streets. The amount of the estimate is £1664. There is no money available on the current year's estimates for the carrying out of the work, but as the residents of the district are anxious that the work be proceeded with, the committee recommends that a special loan area be defined and a poll taken with a view to raising the money by this means. Cr. Andrews asked Cr. F. B. Cooke (chairman of the committee) if anything further had been done regarding the Papanui proposal. Cr. Cooke said that the Health Department was opposed to the suggestion of putting down side channels in Papanui. It was up to the people in the district to move in the matter. Cr. Andrews: That does not answer my question. Why cannot the committee adopt some other means of meeting the position? They are not asking the Health Department in the Beckenhtm case. The Town Clerk (Mr J. S. Neville) reported that the proposal to raise a loan had been turned down by the authorities on the ground that as the district was being sewered the necessity for side channels was becoming less and less. Cr. Cooke undertook that the matter would be looked into.
