Very general regret will be felt at the news of the death on Friday of Miss Lavinia Coates, 0.8. E., who left Wellington some years ago to take up her residence with her brother, Sir James 3. B. Coates, of Auckland., Miss Coates was the daughter of: Mr James Coates, a barrister by profession, who came to New Zealand aa private .secretary to Captain Bobson, the first Governor of the Colony, and who, when the Government was established in Auckland, became the first Clerk to the Legislative Council, and was Sheriff of Auckland up to the time of his death in 1853. Miss Coates was thus identified with the Dominion from its very early days, and some of her reminiscences were most interesting. While in Wellington she endeared herself to a large circle of friends, and was a most hospitable and kindly resident, and her charming home in Hobson street (now the Mowai Bed Cross Hospital) was the centre of a pleasant social life until the war time. Then it became the centre of great activity. Miss Coates was the president of the "Wellington Victoria League, and as soon as war was declared in 1914 she consulted with Lady Godley and instituted the boxes of "medical comforts" which were the subject of unstinted eulogy on the part of the doctors who went with the first troops from New Zealand. Much sympathy will be felt for Sir James Coates, Mrs Nelson Cher sister), and the intimate friends and relatives of a very fine and kindly lady whose presence will he much missed.
