ACCESS TO SEA.

TUNNEL ROAD ADVOCATED. Beference to the tunnel road scheme was made at the annual meeting of th 6 Christchurch Citizens* Association last night by the chairman of the General Committee (Mr A. S. Taylor). Mr Taylor said that last year the committee had examined the scheme, and recommended to the City Council that it was worthy of consideration. He thought that the Association should take all possible steps to get finality on the question, and that it should not be allowed to hang on indefinitely, like bo many other schemes that come before the City. Christchurch, he said, had a right to be indignant at being refused a grant of £SOO from the Government for investigation purposes, especially since Auckland had been granted £ 1000 for the investigation of the harbour bridge proposal. The latter scheme was more or less of a luxury, whereas direct access to the sea was vital to Christchurch. If there was to be a tunnel road, the matter should be gone ahead with at once, so that the scheme might be completed in a year or two. In Wellington a private company had been formed, a good amount of the necessary capital being already subscribed, for the purpose of putting a tunnel through a hill near Lower Hutt, to give access to the flat land in Wai-nui-o-mata. He felt sure that in * very short space of time the scheme would b# completed, probably while Christeharch was still talking about the port tnnnel proposal. He trusted that the wholt support of the Association would b# put behind the local scheme.
